Yet another bummed-out holiday? Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout is liquid consolation. It's a deep, rich, sweetly rewarding stout to take the edge off of that grim family gathering, that cheerless annual festival of alienation. This brew is as dark as it gets, as black as the lump of coal you'll be getting for Christmas. Because, let's face it, you've been pretty bad this year.

500 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/5/2012. Pours clear nearly pitch black color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, light smoke/char, and roast/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, light smoke/char, and roast/yeast earthiness. Fair amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, light smoke/char, and roast/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Nice complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt and moderate fruity/earthy yeast flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and fairly creamy/chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Foreign stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and moderate fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a mug and a sniffer. The head was about the same size, it just lasts longer in the snifter.
The rest of the appearance was a dark brown close to black color. Once the head dies, the lacing was semi-thick and clung nicely.
The smell had a little bit of roasty coffee along with roasted chocolate and just a tad of lingering booze in the background. Was that some light cinnamon too? Maybe, if so, that’s really light.
The taste was basically the same.
On the palate, this one sat right at a medium on the body. Sessionable? Not exactly, I sipped this one for the most part.
Overall, I say this was a good foreign stout to definitely have again.

Bottle. Pours dark. Mild, odd cocoa chocolate flavor with some roasted malt flavor. A very bland, plain stout overall in my opinion. Not the worst, but I wasn’t too impressed.

Very dark, no head. It’s not high on a stout aroma but you can tell its strength from its nose, and of course when supped, however it’s not overbearing. Full-bodied with some sweetness.

Bottle at home, 10/03/13. Pours dark cola brown with a fast disappearing tan had that dissipates to nothing. Not a pretty looker in my book - flat and lifeless! Nose is roast malt, liqourice, chocolate, leather. Taste comprises roast malt, sugars - quite sweet, yeast notes almost Belgian like, light spice, dark fruits, raisens, plums, dates. Medium bodied with soft carbonation, dry in the finish. Drinkable but far from a great and not one I’d return to.

50 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 05.11.2009
Aroma has licorice, some soy sauce, coffee notes and hints of cocoa. Flavour has salty licorice, some cocoa, semi‐dark chocolate, hints of ash and soy sauce. Quite watery for this ABV – and quite typical foreign stout.
