Yet another bummed-out holiday? Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout is liquid consolation. It's a deep, rich, sweetly rewarding stout to take the edge off of that grim family gathering, that cheerless annual festival of alienation. This brew is as dark as it gets, as black as the lump of coal you'll be getting for Christmas. Because, let's face it, you've been pretty bad this year.

(Draught at Bishop’s Arms Folkungagatan, Stockholm, 7 Dec 2012) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, dried fruit, liquorice and a touch of smoke. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, dried fruit, dark rye bread, hints of smoke and a gentle, spicy bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, slightly sweetish. Well balanced and tasty. Nice one.

Bottle. Pours with a nice, long lasting frothy head. Colour very dark reddish brown. Roasted aroma, also hints of chocolate and a little coffee, caramel. Moderate sweetness, somewhat less bitter, but very balanced taste. Only quite watery. I lack any finish, I can sense a little something, probably bitter, but it is very mild. All is good, but boring. If only I could somehow amplify what the beer already has, the rating would be much higher.

50 cl bottle. Kappy’s Liquor’s, Malden, MA. Used Snifter. Thick fluffy head that died to a thin ring pretty quickly. Nose of roasted malt and booze. Tastes of chocolate, vanilla, and lightly roasted malts. Light-bodied with a smooth texture. It goes down easy. Light alcohol in the finish which gives it a nice warming on the way down. Some decent flavors however, it lacks body and complexity.
