Yet another bummed-out holiday? Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout is liquid consolation. It's a deep, rich, sweetly rewarding stout to take the edge off of that grim family gathering, that cheerless annual festival of alienation. This brew is as dark as it gets, as black as the lump of coal you'll be getting for Christmas. Because, let's face it, you've been pretty bad this year.

Sampled @ SBWF on September 29. Pours palish black with a small white head. Smell is sweet and spicy. It’s also rather subtle and not too intense. Taste is very fullbodied and sweet with roasted malt and some peppers.

50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Pours a typical coke colour, dark brown with a tawny glow, and no head; musty aroma of brown sugar; some coffee and chocolate notes, but otherwise thinly bodied with a demarara sugar taste; and a dry finish with some warming alcohol.

Deep dark brown coloured body with an amber and ruby tinted glow near the bottom of the glass. A thin light brown head tops the beer and almost no movement is seen in the body. Aroma of raisins, figs, nuts, pears and brown sugar - pretty nice, hardly any malt or alcohol noticeable at all. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep strong flavour with a lot of roasted malt, raisins, prunes and a ton of brown sugar sweetness noticeable. Full-bodied with a pungent aftertaste of mostly sweet and nutty tastes, a little malt and a touch of a bitter coffee aftertaste which is very nice. Overall, a surprisingly complex and intense beer that shows very well for the style and the cold weather. Definitely worth trying and you should be able to find it at a lot of places around the country! I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from World Market in Arlington, Virginia (Pentagon City) as a Christmas Gift for me on 23-December-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 01-March-2011.

Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights when held to light. Good sized mocha head sticks around for a little while leaving some lace on the way down. Smells of milk chocolate, a little roast, some bread, maybe some licorice. Tastes like it smells chocolate, bread, maybe a bit of molasses and hops in there too. Oily/creamy mouthfeel, medium body, medium to high carbonation. Really kind of unremarkable. Tasted more like a brown or a porter than a stout. I though the body was a bit light for the style and it lacked enough roasted malt flavor and aroma. The taste was actually very flavorful, just not the beer I thought I purchased.

Drucken på Bishop Gustav. Närmast kolsvart med ljusbrunt skum. Väldigt fruktig, fyllig, närmast tjock och lätt bränd. Torkad frukt, choklad, lång eftersmak, måttlig beska.

Bottle. It pours a ruby-ish dark brown body under a small, beige head. A bit weak on the nose, with chocolate and charcoal notes. The flavor is more pronounced, chocolate and coffee, quite sweetish. Medium body. Roasted finish. A quite nice one, but I could wish for more aroma, especially considering it’s a beer for the dark season when there’s time to smell what you’re drinking. 100814
