Yet another bummed-out holiday? Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout is liquid consolation. It's a deep, rich, sweetly rewarding stout to take the edge off of that grim family gathering, that cheerless annual festival of alienation. This brew is as dark as it gets, as black as the lump of coal you'll be getting for Christmas. Because, let's face it, you've been pretty bad this year.

Tap@Taphouse, Copenhagen (ØJ-dag share 03/11/2016) - pours black with a beige head. Toasted and roasted malty, balanced with some chocolate and caramel sweetness, slight dark dried fruit nuance, hoppy backing, dry roasted finish. Nice.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown with slight reddish tint against the light, very small frothy beige head, sweetish liquor aroma, low carbonation, sweetish mocha taste with alcohol undertones, thin body, long mocha finish with alcohol aftertaste. A bit too thin and too much alcohol taste left in mouth.

Amazing how I can not get this in Shropshire, but found it in California while on holiday. 500ml bottle opened on 4th June 2016. Not really a sunny day brew, but I wanted to have it anyway! As the name suggests, it’s black (like a lump of coal), the head a beige blanket of foam. Sweeter than I expected, and not as rich in body depth either, but still a decent beer with slightly over roasted maltiness coming through in both the nose and taste. Glad I bought it.

Bottle. Pours opaque reddish black with small white head. Aroma is roasted malt, soy sauce, ground coffee, sour apples and hints of sweet licorice and campfire smoke. Taste is medium to very sweet and light bitter. Body is creamy with soft carbonation. Finish is long and mostly sweet with notes of malt syrup, black coffee, soy sauce and hints of ammonium chloride and mint. Mild, smooth and pleasant but not very Christmas-like.

0,5L bottle (from Drink Shop, Tallinn), BB 25.09.15. Pours dark brown with beige head. The head doesn’t stay. Aroma is fruits, roast, butter, diacetyl. Flavor is sweet, roast, and some diacetyl. Finish is roast bitter. Alcohol is well covered. Overall: not a fan of diacetyl, hence not a fan of this beer.

500ml bottle picked up at Supermarket Liquors
Pours clear dark brown with a small beige head, spotty lacing. Aroma of dark ripe fruit, chocolate, mild smokiness and holiday spices. Flavors of dark malts, ripe fruit, chocolate, rye bread, bitters with a dry finish
Kind of like waking up and finding a Lump of Coal in your stocking.

An element of sourness ere, almost like berry - the keg has certainly gone bad. Pours maroonish without much head or lacing. Light tang in finish with some sourness. Not a huge fan - this is certainly worth giving to bad kids on Christmas. Cask at Churchkey.
