Yet another bummed-out holiday? Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout is liquid consolation. It's a deep, rich, sweetly rewarding stout to take the edge off of that grim family gathering, that cheerless annual festival of alienation. This brew is as dark as it gets, as black as the lump of coal you'll be getting for Christmas. Because, let's face it, you've been pretty bad this year.

A deep dark stout with a thick moka head. An herbaceous chocolate aroma with light licorice notes. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate with herbal notes, light licorice, warming alcohol, cold coffee. Rich and mineral. Bottle from Half Time, summer 2008.

Bottle. Dark toffee black with a light tan head. Aroma of dark fruit and dates with treacle. Plum and treacle flavor with a bit of darker malts. Medium bodied. Flavor of dark fruits and treacle, but then gets a bit sweeter. Not bad, but it’s not what you’re always in the mood for.

50 cl bottle - Pours near black with a coffee accented roast malt aroma and a one finger tan head. The flavor is of sweet roasted malt with a touch of chocolate and coffee. It’s medium bodied and lightly carbonated. There’s just a hint of acidity as well as some bitterness and a little alcohol in the finish. I expected an 8% stout to have a fuller, more complex flavor. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but I’m still glad it was half price at the liquor store instead of the usual $7.50 because it’s not great.

Very dark brown but somewhat thin for a stout. Some ruby tones at the edges. Thin fleeting head. Some chocolate in the aroma along with a good amount of alcohol. Thin bodied.

Probably should be rated as an imp stout, this is pretty strong. Ha ha, lump of coal, example of fine marketing with a story on the label. These Ridgeway beers are a excellent example of advertising taken to the max. Good gift for a beer geek, if they haven’t tasted it already that is. Big 17 oz unique bottle poured three times into a smaller clear tumbler. Smell is typical stout with a volatile wedge. Roasty imperial stout olfactory. Head fades quickly. Initially the flavor does not seem to be over the top. 8%?, go figger, taste is less than 8%! Probably not more offensive than most impy stouts Ive tried. Has personality yet it is nearly palatable. Roasty, but un-mild enough to be nearly sessionable for a lager lover. The finish leaves a lingering burned wood finish with an anti-hot alky presence. Rude, buzzy murky beer, fer sure. Dark black English stout with a kick. On the friendly side for 8% of this style, I like rather well for this grouping. Not a waste of money, even tho it was quite expensive.

Pours black, with brownish head. Aroma of dark fruits and candied sugar and caramel malts with a light roasted finish.. Taste is the same as aroma with some extra spices. Overall finish is plain.
