One of the more recent editions in this ongoing series of one-offs, a barleywine aged on barrels previously containing a variant of Tres Hombres rum that was mixed with honey. Can at Kantien in Ghent. Mousy, somewhat irregular but creamy, pale yellowish white head lacing in shreds and spreading a thin greyish veil over the surface of a misty, ruddy dark bronze beer with warm mahogany brown hue. Intense, rather ‘desserty’ nose: candied cherries and dates, caramel sauce, lots of sweet brown rum and indeed lots of (old brown) honey as well, fig jam, plum compote, vanilla-scenting wet oak, raisins, soggy gingerbread, peanuts, glue, touch of beef stock. Sweet onset, candied fruits and fruit jam (fig, plum, raisin), very light umami hint but most of all, a strong dosage of sweet, dark honey, stretching all the way into the finish; softish carb, full, vinous but – due to the honey sweetness – also somewhat cloying mouthfeel. Caramelly and peanutty maltiness, thin bitterish-toasty edge, leading to a very boozy finish, in which the malt sweetness and a dash of spicy hop bitterishness are completely surrounded in, and penetrated by, what can indeed be described as a mixture of dark rum with honey. Oaky tannins provide some dryness but the rum-alcohol heats up the throat as well, albeit in a tolerable, not too astringent manner; it is however the sticky honey sweetness that lingers most strikingly. Light toasty aspect remains noticeable as well. Very rich, desserty, sweet sipper, a barleywine of considerable ambition and complexity indeed, though for me just a tad too sweet to be at the real top end of Kees’ barrel series.

That's better. Good dose of rum here, but not solvent'y as so often happens. Maybe that's the honey? Sweet, a bit woody, reasonably bitter. Flavor lingers nicely. Quite alcoholic, and very thin. Rum will never be my favorite barrel, but this is not bad. Gets better as it warms: Thicker, less alcoholic, more honey flavors. Reminding of honey licorice, which works well with the rum. Nice.
