Stout beers are a variety of Porter, which were first brewed in London around 1730. Porter beers were always dark and the name refers to its popularity with street and river porters. It quickly became popular with the working classes. Porter was the first beer style that conquered the world by the end of the 18th century. Somewhere along the line, porter drinkers added the adjective ‘stout’ to Porter when ordering, referring to the strong Porter beer. Eventually, the name Stout became slang for strong dark beer.
The Tale version of this historical beer is extraordinary, as it is the strongest found in the region and the only one in Africa using Ghana cocoa in the brewing process. Adding in rice alongside with roasted barley and malt, this top fermented Cocoa Stout is much more drinkable than typical bitter stouts.
Tale 8 or Black Tale has a surprising aroma and invites you to discover its delicate chocolate and coffee notes followed by a touch of sweet bitterness.

0.33 l bottle from 'Mr. Hop', best before May 2027. Pitch black with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, quite roasty and minimally fruity aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted hazelnut and hints of blueberry. Gently sweet, malty, moderately bitter, quite roasty and minimally fruity taste of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted hazelnut, burnt bread crust and traces of blueberry, followed by a short, quite roasty-bitter finish. Medium to full body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Decent stout, nice for the tick.

330ml bottle @ Belgian Beer Geeks Winter Gathering. Pours dark brown, loose off-white head. Initial sniff brings hints towards an odd adjunct sweetness, continuing to taste.. a little grainy and dusty. Strange stout really.

1/III/25 - 33cl bottle from Dranken Marlou (Zonhoven), shared @ Belgian Beer Geek Gathering (2025 Winter/Spring edition), BB: 9/IV/26, bottled: 9/IV/24, lot 030.N (2025-189)
Little cloudy brown beer, practically no head, a few unstable bubbles, non adhesive. Aroma: malty, caramel, good roast, not too bad! MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very malty start, soft acidity, wet grains, hay, pretty bitter, and this weird sourness lingering in the back. Aftertaste: bitter, dry, acidic, meh. Not very good, albeit drinkable.

Bouteille 33cl @ Belgian Winter gathering 01 March 2025 – Tim’s place, thanks Tim.

Bottle at Tagbo Falls Lodge, Liati Wote. Aroma is rather plain. Quick quite disappearing foam. Then foamless black. Taste is okay - like beginners porter. Sweet cherry cola taste.

Panda at home, thanks to Graham Grumbo, 07/03/24. Lighter shade of black with a thin beige cap. Nose is light roast, toffee, dark fruit rinds, herb, cocoa powder. Taste comprises roast malts, charr, treacle toffee, light spice, dates, raisins. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Okay stout if lacking some depth for 8%.
