The West Coast IPA is epic and legendary for good reasons and we should know – we helped put them on the map in the 90s. We know West Coast because we ARE West Coast and we’re leaning into our history with this updated take on the style that kicked off IPA’s domination of the beer aisle. This is everything a West Coast IPA should be.

12 ounce can. Medium gold pour. Rocky beige head. Perfumy hop aroma hints at citrus and pine. Flavor upfront is distinctively bittersweet. Notes of grapefruit and pine. Definitely getting old school IPA vibes here. Reminds me of the first IPA I ever tasted; Ballantine IPA. Smooth, but with an edge. Pithy, peppery hop finish and aftertaste. Nicely done.

Draught @ Bangers & Lace, Chicago (Nov 2024). Faintly cloudy dark yellow with a large foamy light beige head, light piney aroma, adequate carbonation, medium bitter piney taste with floral hops, thin body, long finish. Decent West Coast IPA.

Time to sample a 12 oz can of blessedly named West Coast IPA. I’m using a snifter for tonight’s tasting, the tab is lifted and I pour. A pleasant orange-gold body topped by a barely-there skim of minute, white bubbles. I get a nose of hops, apricots and grain, all nice. The taste is mostly straightforward, old school IPA. Very hoppy, white bread, a bit of honey sweetness, cedar, malt and paper. More bitter than sweet, fine by me. What you see is what you get here.

12 fl. oz. can from the Beer Republic advent calendar. Cloudy dark golden with a more than one finger white foamy head in the glass. Looks good. Floral and citrus hoppy with resin on the nose. Taste starts with bitter hop and malt, some fruity elements, low carbonation. Dry malty bitterness to the end. Nice one.
