Another grape lambic - one has to be an oenologist these days with all those grape lambics popping up - by Tilquin, this time using Mourvèdre, an originally Spanish and quite characterful grape variety. One of three recent releases, the others being grape lambics. Bit of a 'delayed' gusher so keep a glass nearby. Loudly but briefly fizzing, pale pinkish off-white head, coming up and then retreating again like the 'head' on a glass of champagne, leaving a thin ring of foam; hazy brownish cognac-tinged reddish amber robe. Aroma of grape juice and rosé wine (Mourvèdre actually being used in certain rosé wines too), sour yoghurt, blueberries, crabapples, something sulfuric, initially quite pronounced 'putteke' (sewer water) even, bread crust, grape seed oil, rosehip tea, lemon, wet clay, horse stable, vague background note of candied cherry. Tart onset, lots of fruit acidity over lemony and lactic lambic acidity, filled with dry rosé wine-like 'grapeyness' with side notes of red apple peel, purple gooseberry, cranberry and a dash of lemon, finely but fiercely tingling fizz, rounded and rather vinous mouthfeel with something 'gummy' or chalky to it; smooth bready backbone under growing lactic sourness and continuing lively, red-orange fruitiness, with hints of rosehip and apricot appearing every now and then. This refined but sharp fizz continues in the finish, adding a certain crispness to the whole; near-spicy but well-measured grape skin tannins overrule woodiness here, offering a very mild bitterish accent to a sour-fruity finish where the fleshiness of the Mourvèdre grapes adds 'fullness' and rotundity. All the way at the back, the fleshy grape sweetness unexpectedly returns, adding a new turn to a show I thought was already over by that time. Overall dry rosé wine impression with pronounced funkiness and certain spicy elements, quite distinct from other Tilquin grape lambics indeed - but not the most sophisticated one so far. I think I will give the two others some more time in the cellar before opening, and perhaps that is what I should have done with this one too, as I am confident that a bit more age on it could bring significant improvement.

Shortlived pink rim over hazy red to terra cotta beer. Red fruit, lambic, but also rubber, sulphur, burning tires. Sourish with fruitacids, lactic acid and sour pink-red grapes. Light body with acidburn and -thinning, tart but not really outright acidic. Remarkably less special than most of Tilquin's recent offerings. Reason?
