Unlucky 13? If anything, 13 has been a lucky number and year for us! Here is our version of a Weizen Doppelbock, a very rarely brewed style marrying the complexities of two great German traditions, Weiss and Doppelbock. The aroma is dominated by fruity and spicy esters produced by the German Weiss yeast strain with a dry drinkability from the wheat malt. The flavor and color are dominated by the unique specialty grains that produce the Doppelbocks flavors of fresh baked bread, toffee and cocoa, and a dark-ruby red hue. Since goats have traditionally adorned Bock labels, we chose a Rocky Mountain Goat for this Rocky Mountain Bock. Peace to all and follow your dreams!
Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, imported German specialty grains and hops, and one unique German yeast.

Poured deep brown with ruby highlights and a large tan head. Aroma was lightly toasted malt, molasses, alcohol, and spices. Flavor of molasses, roasted malt, spice and alcohol. Finishes with a nice dry warmth. Well blended, thoguh not overly complex. A solid beer, but not amazing. Would drink again, though.

Woof. Full aroma, begins with an aroma of clove mingled in caramel, not much fruit, including banana, to speak of. Rather dark, with a surprsingly medium head. Sitting in the glass under normal illumination, it almost looks like a porter. Held to the light, you can tell its not so dark, but a deep garnet color. A bit too crystal clear however! Flavor up front is dominantly sweet, with a heavy melanoidiny munich malt palate, and then whoa - where’s the carbonation?! Hardly any, and instead there’s this massive sea of sticky sweet malt and only the slightly spicy note of weizen to provide any sort of contrast. A note of raisiny fruitiness comes to the fore at some point. I started this off somewhat cold, as cold as I’d drink a good doppelbock or weizen, but it didn’t seem to work. As I let it warm (I certainly wasn’t motivated to drain this very fast), it just got worse - the heavy malt sweetness became cloying, and a heavy alcohol burn became apparent. Any way you slice it, its an unbalanced, undercarbonated mess.

Bottle pours a clear deep brown. A small light tan head. Aromas are chocolate and wheat bread. Sweet like licorice and tootsie rolls. Easy on the hop bitterness as expected with a\some dark fruitiness as well. Slightly alcohol and a bit fumy at the end. Finishes smooth ans soft. Nice.

Bottle courtesy of SS: Poured a dark black color weizenbock with a medium foamy head with average retention but good lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt is pretty enticing with some light clove note also noticeable. Taste of sweet caramel is a bit overpowering and hides the clove aspect of the beer which would have been enjoyable. Alcohol is slightly detectable but I had worst and beer is not fully filtrated which I ma grateful for. Overall, I would say that this is not the best of weizenbock but a very good effort nonetheless from a brewery that sometimes leave me puzzle.

bottle - Pours dark brown with an aroma of malt, yeast, and banana. The flavor pretty well matches the aroma with some alcohol thrown in mainly in the finish. It goes down easy. This is a very tasty beer and worth trying.

Bottle. Murky brown, low head. Vineous and chocolaty aroma. Fruity, berrylike, estery, citrus, pine, clay. Medium body. Berry aftertaste. Nice but, nowhere neaer the complexity of a Aventinus.

Deep red-brown body, thin tan head. Horrifying cloying soy and honey notes taint the wet grass, spice, and banana characteristics that should dominate the aroma. Is this another ultra-sweet syrupy nightmare from Avery? Ok, the aroma’s not bad overall, but I’m pretty sensitive to the "Avery taint." The body is thankfully a bit drier, and very spicy, the esters and alcohol dominating the finish. The toasts and dark fruits complement these characteristics nicely; this is almost entering Dubbel territory. Great complexity and mouthfeel; I agree it is a touch hot. A pleasant surprise. And, with that, prospects of a nightmare diminish.

(Bottle 65 cl) Clear, reddish brown with a beige head. Vinous, alcoholic aroma. Quite full-bodied with sweetish notes of dried and overripe fruit. Somewhat sweet malt and some accents of wood. No real bitterness but quite some alcohol in the finish. Quite delicate. 061006

A hazy deep red beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet and very malty with quite strong notes of roasted malt, as well as lighter notes of rye bread and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and caramel, as well as lighter notes of spices and roasted sausages - I have no idea what gives me that last impression. The end brings a slight alcohol burn in the throat. Tasted this blind and found no traces of the wheat - closer to a standard doppelbock than a weizenbock. All in all I’m not that fond of this beer.

Bottled. Very dark ruby color, good big foamy tan head. Light banana esters, licorice and alcohol in the nose. Lightly roasted, fruity (banana esters), some alcohol but suprisingly light for this ABV, tasty, easy to drink. Sweeter than German ones, maybe because of hopping?
