Unlucky 13? If anything, 13 has been a lucky number and year for us! Here is our version of a Weizen Doppelbock, a very rarely brewed style marrying the complexities of two great German traditions, Weiss and Doppelbock. The aroma is dominated by fruity and spicy esters produced by the German Weiss yeast strain with a dry drinkability from the wheat malt. The flavor and color are dominated by the unique specialty grains that produce the Doppelbocks flavors of fresh baked bread, toffee and cocoa, and a dark-ruby red hue. Since goats have traditionally adorned Bock labels, we chose a Rocky Mountain Goat for this Rocky Mountain Bock. Peace to all and follow your dreams!

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, imported German specialty grains and hops, and one unique German yeast.

Bottled. Dark brownish ruby colour, big beige head. Aroma is alcohol, plum and a bit glueish. Flavour is malty, alcoholic and bananas. Some roast and smoke also. Lovely balanced. Pleasantly done and a great session beer.

Draught pint at Sunset Grill on 8/4/06. Not sure why I forgot this one.
Chalk-colored grey/off-white head is small and shows low to moderate retention, eventually receding to a ring/partial-cover. Dark, cola-brown liquid shows soy/tan highlights in the light and has a medium-high clarity with quite a bit of large-bubbled carbonation rushing about. Little/no lacing created.
Chocolate cola notes quickly mix with cotton candy and bubble gum. Seems this is going to be some sugary stuff based on a quick sniff. Some assertive roast always seems to do this style well, but here it seems pushed over by the pale malt sugars or just plain non-existent. Wheat is pretty few and far between and more of that would soften this insipid sweetness oozing from the liquid. Not to mention, there is hardly any bock-like yeastiness on the finish, perhaps just a pinch of light vinousness. Honestly smells more like a simple, amped-up dunkel with some weizen yeast qualities, though very light at that. Some light banana cream notes and too much cola and bubble gum. Where the hell is all of this cola coming from? Aroma strength, furthermore, is not very strong, though nor is it alcoholic/fuselic.
Less bubble gum, thank god, in the flavor. In its place, there is more sticky caramel, light fudgey chocolate and yes, cola. Little/no sourish bockiness, a rather gassy, overcarbonated body which is too sugary/sweet no matter how much CO2 you cut it with and hardly any real wheat dryness/softness. And as it warms, the slight alcohol warmth turns in to a more raw fusel sharpness. Black pepper-like phenol astringency further clouds the finish and some dry, bland breadiness emerges as well.

Poured black with brown hues from the bomber with a nearly non existent white head. Looks kind of like flat diet coke. When the bottle first openned I smelled strong vanilla, in the pint glass it smelled sweet and malty. Initial flavor has some vanilla, good malt, only slightly roasted. The sweetness is nice but not overwhelming. You can definitely feel the alcohol on the after taste which is clean despite the heat. It’s Avery, you’ll like it.

Deep brown, quite clear head. Aroma of pears, malts (strong roasted, straw, molasses), liquor. Nice. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet initial flavour. Moderately bitter finish. Quite heavily bodied.

LCRBM2. Very dark brown with good coffee/malt. Really quite lovely and drinkable. Strong though. Sherry. Alcohol and dry coffee malt. Got a bit much after a couple of sips though.

Red-foxy amber, small amberish head. Alcohol & higher alcohols. Fusels, heated yeast esters. In the taste, licorice, sweet, alcoholic, no wheat, no extra esters. Burning, cloying and oily, viscous. This is not really very subtle, and not Adam’s best. Pushing the yeast to the limit, yes?

I understand the mixed reviews for this beer. It looks like a standard bock, black, and lightly carbonated. The hgh ABV is not in the aroma, but there is caramel and some smoke. Flavor is sweet with fruit and sugar; raisins, sweet cherry, fermenting apples. The alcohol is also in the flavor as well, but it is not unpleasant. The wheat presence is clear, and it puts a softer edge on what would otherwise be a poweful doppelbock.

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 10 Aug) Colour is very dark brown with ruby notes, short off-white head. Nose is fruity and spicy with dried fruit (figs, raisins?), chocolate and cherries (a bit like a Belgian dubbel actually). Taste is fruity with lots of dried fruit (a distinct hint of dates), prunes, marzipan, dark rye bread and wild berries. Slightly sweet, smooth finish with some wheat character. Complex but in great balance. Lots of personality and very nice indeed.

Dark amber pour with impressive lacework - quite a complex aroma (of tart earthiness, port, cherry, fig, plum) that still manages to get overpowered by alcohol - quite sweet and fairly hot - bready, pastry-like flavors mingle with raisin and toffee - some spicy qualities and earthy notes give this a hint of belgian quad-like flavor - it’s pretty good, but a little too all over the place and alcoholic - this one needs some age on it.
