Schwarzbier (black lager) has been around since at least the 16th century and used to be more widespread than it is today. In the industrial revolution of the 19th century, it was almost displaced by mass-produced lighter beers. Only a few breweries preserved the beer style, and for about 30 years now it has been experiencing a renaissance.
For our Aecht Schlenkerla Erle black lager we use a very special smoked malt. This is not dried over beech wood fire, as is usually the case, but over fire made of alder wood. The alder smoked malt brings a fine, complex smoky flavor to the beer – less strong and spicy than in our classic smoked beer. A high roasted malt content provides a pronounced roasted aroma and the dark, almost black color. At 4.2% abv, Aecht Schlenkerla Erle has slightly less alcohol, but is strong in flavor.

Bottle shared on the Eurostar back from Brussels for Rich's 50th weekend. Thanks to Colin. A clear mahogany brown coloured pour with a good sized greyish beige cap. Aroma is lovely big smoked wood, phenols, bacon frazzels, spicy smoked sausage, brown sugars, camp fire. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, nutty toasted malts, hints of rye, big smoked sausage, oak. Spicy notes in the finish. Palate is semi sweet, rounded, moderate carbonation. Nice.

Bottle on the 1659 Bruxelles-London Eurostar, 11/02/24. Extremely dark mahogany brown approaching black topped with a light khaki cap that dissipates to a swirl. Nose is charr, smoked malts, bonfire, burnt toffee, herb. Taste comprises dark malts, spice, smoked meats, herb, charr, ashen notes, brown bread, smoked malts. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid Rausch.

Bottle from Raynville Superstore. It pours darkest brown to black with a bubbly khaki coloured head. The aroma is dark roasted malt, cacao nibs, bourbon cream biscuits, intoxicating smokes malts (probably restrained for these guys), bonfire and smoked ham. The taste is smooth, toasty malts, well judged smoked malt, bonfire, bitter - sweet, toasty, slightly charred, ash, tannin, umami, light liquorice, dark chocolate, touch of rocky road and molasses with a smooth toasty, smokey finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Flavourful and super well rounded.

Bottle. More deep brown than black, with small beige head. Aroma is nutty, malty, smoke. Taste is smoked but a bit lighter than other Schlenkerla beers, light roasted notes, dry mouthfeel. Easy to drink, light body, low carbonation. Nice beer.
