Schwarzbier (black lager) has been around since at least the 16th century and used to be more widespread than it is today. In the industrial revolution of the 19th century, it was almost displaced by mass-produced lighter beers. Only a few breweries preserved the beer style, and for about 30 years now it has been experiencing a renaissance.
For our Aecht Schlenkerla Erle black lager we use a very special smoked malt. This is not dried over beech wood fire, as is usually the case, but over fire made of alder wood. The alder smoked malt brings a fine, complex smoky flavor to the beer – less strong and spicy than in our classic smoked beer. A high roasted malt content provides a pronounced roasted aroma and the dark, almost black color. At 4.2% abv, Aecht Schlenkerla Erle has slightly less alcohol, but is strong in flavor.

Cuivre, col blanc-cassé crémeux.
Arôme sur un léger bouquet fumé boisé, malt délicat avec une pointe de crystal, caramel, rétro-nasal houblonné moyen assez fleuri.
Palais est malté, grillé presque sur une note de Vienna - crystal, fumé plaisant, le boisé est modéré. Finement poussiéreux en fin de bouche, effet un peu liquid smoke, amertume fine, malt pâle et léger pils.

Bottle, 0.5l. Black pour, no head, no lacing. Nose is roasted malt, coffee, coal, smoke. Light bacon notes in the background. Light body, medium carbonation, lively. Lightweight mouthfeel and texture, somewhat watery, easily drinkable, refreshingly fizzy. Balanced roasty bittersweet taste. Aroma of roasted malt, coal, coffee, toasted caramel. Light dark fruits, figs, smoked bacon. Woody notes, mild sugary. Medium lasting finish, roasty, light bitter, lingering smoke notes. Quite smooth.

NYE 23/24 🎆 Donker en geroosterd, droog en een beetje mager tov z’n vettige soortgenoten. Wel lekker zo’n zwarte potloodpunt of inktpatroon. Mooie rooksmaak die volledig & vakkundig integreerd met het bier. Canned at B. United/OEC, drunk 12/29/23. Clear, dark mahogany. Small, beige head to ring quickly. Char, salt, roast, chocolate and light vanilla. Hint of bacon. Don't know much about alder. Definitely gives off a good Schwartz Bier impression, though. Soft, malty, good attenuation, lots of roast and salty char. Very dry on the finish with pepper and very light honey-chocolate-like character. Clean, crisp, peppery.
