Czech Garnet Lager.

Subtle, yet satisfying. Translated as “half-dark”, this decoction brewed lager has a slight roast flavor from Vienna and chocolate malts.

Tap at BeerGeek. Med-thin body, rather dry this polotmavy. Medium carbo. Medium bitterness, light sweetness. Moderate caramelly, toasted bready, light nutty maltiness. A bit of subtle hoppy background, grassy, earthy. Spot on, clean, tasty, quite good.

On tap at the Prague Beer Fast. Mid-late on day 1 and early on day 2 to confirm, ending up with identical notes. Slightly hazy darker amber body, off-white head. Green apple and light dry caramelly maltiness, okay, if imperfect, not too Czech. Lean, dry taste, dry caramelly maltiness, grainy touches, not much hoppiness - a bit of floral notes, bit minerally. Not bad as such, but as a polotmavé, this is sub par. Sorry to say it, these guys make some very nice lagers, but with this sample, I can but hope that it was a fluke batch, or that it somehow developed some of these notes due to travel (oxidation somehow not influencing things much other than by recreating acetaldehyde?). Also, it isn't a particularly true to style polotmavé either with this body and even the flavor balance. Right now, until I taste it in different shape, I have to state that it could have been heavily overrated by people with little experience with the style - which few people outside of CZ have to be honest, so it's understandable, but, on the other hand I'd be shocked if it was in perfect shape and form.

4 oz draft at Schillngs Lagerfest. Soft, malty, well-attenuated, clean bready and toasted grain. Soft caramel character. Mineral hints and low hop character. A damn near perfect example of the style.

Lukr at Schilling, 3/16/24. Clear auburn-amber. Large, frothy, light beige head, well-retained. Mineral, wood, earth, crisp yeast, not too much specialty malt (no overbearing toast). Fresh, clean, bright, highly aromatic, malty. Dusting of woody, earthy, herbal hops. Soft and malty with moderate herbal bitterness. Great base malt adding honey like character with just the right amount of specialty malt adding a bit of fruit and very light toast. Maybe a touch of light woodsmoke. Perfect maltiness and attenuation. Lingering dryness and moderately bitter hop. Sensational.

Side pull at the brewery. Pours a clear, amber color, with a big, foamy, tan head. The nose is mild leather, lavender, hay, cardamom, and toast. Dry and malty, with a bracing, earthy bitterness. Medium body, creamy, and brisk. Quality, mellow lager.
