This fabulous barley wine is a malty, velvety smooth and full bodied beer with a rich dark ruby colour. Old Nick is overflowing with sumptuous flavours of fruit and hops, with a complex bitterness on the finish.

Pale ale and crystal malt together with Young’s unique mix of cane sugar and Fuggle and Goldings hops.

Production ceased with the shutdown of Young's Wandsworth site.

500 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 7.2%. Brewed at the Ram brewery, shortly before closing, BB date 20. Sep. 2007 (will probably be good much longer than that). Code L6263 07:57 Y. Hazy deep brown colour, large and lasting tan head. Nice aroma of malts and hops (no surprise), hints of vanilla, chocolate, raisins and leather. The flavour is perfectly balanced between the malts and hops, both elements being present in generous amounts. Notes of caramel, toffee and oak. Sweet, but not too much. I drank it colder than the recommended room temperature, and don’t regret that. A hoppy bitterness + oak in the aftertaste. A very nice beer - I hope "Wells and Young’s" will keep it in their portfolio.

Bottle. Best by June 12th 2006, so I don’t know if the flavor is not up to par with the regular version. One of the better barley wine beers I have had, slightly lower in alcohol content compared to most I have had, but that is made up in the flavor of the beer. Nice roasted malt and caramel flavors.

My first barley wine. Pretty glad I picked up this beer before it is gone for good. Pours with a really big head that I was totally not expecting because I heard that this style typically has small heads. Nice sweet tastes on the pale. Minimal hops and minimal alcohol flavour. Overall a good beer that I would have again if it were not so horribly expensive where I live.

16.9 oz bottle - Pours dark reddish brown with a thin head. The aroma is very malty with a touch of dark fruit. The flavor is sweet with mild fruit notes and a bit of spice. There’s really no noticeable alcohol taste, which didn’t surprise me given that the ABV is low for a barley wine. A medium body leads into a slightly dry finish. This is a solid beer.

This beer looks dangerous. Poured a deep opaque brown with ruby red edges. The head is creamy, frothy, thick and off white in color. Sweet and fruity aroma, like plums. The flavor is excellent, sitcky sweet like you’d expect from a barleywine. This beer is flavored like carrot cake. No hint of the alcohol. This is a knockout.

500ml bottle at The Calthorpe Arms, a very cosy and great Young’s pub in the outskirts of Holborn (15.09.2006). Dark amber coloured with a ruby tint. Great off-white head and lacing. The aroma is malty and has notes of dried fruit. Vinous-like flavour with hints of plums and a touch of yeast. Full bodied.

Bottle: Poured a butterscotch color ale with a nice big foamy head with good retention. Aroma of nutty caramel malt is near perfect. Taste is also dominated by the nutty caramel malt. Body is a bit thin for the style and carbonation is quite lively. Hops are no really overly present in here but I think could have provided more complexity if they had been more present. Overall, this is a very nice beer but lacking a little something to make it truly great.

Nose of malt, raisins, and plums; cherry-walnut color with not much head; flavor features malts, raisins, and achocolate note. A tiny bit of hops show in the finish.
