We wanted to brew Cookie Monster having two main ideas. First, that it needs to be a beer that has an ABV above 10% without added sugar. That gives the syrupy creaminess of this classic.

Second, we were very specific about the “dark malts/chocolate/coffee” – “dried fruits/prune” – “biscuit/caramel” balance. We had this taste in mind, and we experimented until we thought we got it.

Tap at KEG. Jet black, no head. Nose is heavy sweetness, lactose, vanilla, even some bourbon notes. Taste is almost sticky sweetness, vanilla, booze, some malts, faint coffee. Heavy body, soft carbo. A bit over the top.

1/5/2023. Bottle from De Bierliefhebber online store, shared at SBGP2. Pours rich black with a small tan coloured head. Aroma of chocolate cookie, cocoa, roasted malt, treacle, dark fruits, molasses. Moderate sweetness and quite heavy bitterness. Full bodied, sticky, average carbonation. Pretty good, but a bit heavy going at times.

Imperial stout by one of those countless new batch breweries in Eastern Europe, Mad Scientist in Budapest, in existence since 2016 and one of the leaders in craft beer as far as Hungary goes. Thanks to Craftmember for sharing! Mousy, lightly lacing, creamy, mocha-beige head; black robe with only the thinnest burgundy edge. During pouring, however, a few clumps of slimy but solid protein came out as well - something I have only seen a few times before, mostly in beers of advanced age... Aroma of lots of bitter black chocolate and black coffee, coffee filters, burnt toast, black peppercorns, charcoal, hard caramel, wet leather, cigars, toasted walnuts, dried dates. Sweetish onset but densely so and absolutely not cloying - no, this is that kind of old-fashioned 'dried date' sweetness that opens so many good stouts, paired with a very, very subtle gravy-ish umami accent and gently carbonated. Full, oily body, lovely thick walnutty and bitter-chocolatey backbone, sweetish at first but restrainedly so, yet quickly shifting to full-fledged, mouth-filling roasted bitterness further enhanced by a confident, lingering peppery hop bitterness and a glow of whisky-like alcohol. The black coffee-like roastedness goes on and on after that. Too bad for those four or five 'thick mucus' chunks (almost half a centimeter in diameter), which are not too appetizing to say the least, but otherwise this is a very old-fashioned, uncompromisingly roasty imperial stout, reminding me of my first encounters with the style, a decade or two ago when they were still a very exclusive and elusive rarity in Europe - and long before the Great Sweetening came along. I love a stout with this profile and hadn't it been for those protein chunks, this one would certainly have scored 4+ for me.

Bottle, 0.33l. Aroma of berries, cherries, roasted malt, chocolate and biscuits. Pours almost black color with thin creamy brown head and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts with sweet and rich roasted malt and chocolate, follows by sour coffee and ripe fruit, mouthfeel is smooth and warm, while finish is medium bitter. Full body, creamy texture and average carbonation in palate. Sweet monster...
