Brandy Barrel Barley Wine is a limited barrel-aged beer that blurs the lines between grape and grain. The idea behind this beer was ignited when we procured brandy barrels from a premium California distiller, all wet with grape brandy goodness. Inspired by this windfall, we brewed a special barley wine and co-fermented it with Paso Robles-grown white wine grapes, accounting for 48 percent of the total liquid. Finally, we aged it for a year in the fresh brandy barrels. The result is a beer-wine hybrid like no other, showing vibrant fruit flavors that marry perfectly with classic brandy notes and boozy barrel character. This beer was produced exclusively for the blending of our 2021 Anniversary Ale, marking the 25th anniversary of Firestone Walker.

Pours a deep amber/copper colour and a small beige head that leaves just a small ring. Aroma's: vinous, boozy, fruity, white grape juice, caramel/fudge. Retronasal: boozy, toffee-ish sweetness, fruit, sweet wine. Flavour is sweet with light fruity sourness. Warming alcohol, fairly strong alcohol feel. Above medium bodied. Long finish, light woody. Interesting and very nice.

Panda at home, thanks to Kenneth, 13/01/24. Deep amber approaching light chestnut brown with an off white head that veers edgewards. Nose is stewed fruits, light brandy nip, booze tunes, figs, sticky toffee pudding, toasted brown sugars. Taste comprises fruit cake mix, dates, figs, brown sugar melt, toffee, brandy barrel, molasses, sultanas. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced kiss of alcohol. Solid sipper.

Almost clear amber beer, small pale tan head, short lived. Airy palate, a very mild dryness, good fine carbonation. Smooth malts, a light creamy sweetness. Spicy brandy immediately obvious but there is more going on here. Some port wine thing going on, more of aged white port. A little barrel induced vanilla before we get back to brandy and a good layered ripe fruitiness. Airy and fairly soft finish. Spicy linger. Very nice indeed. So much more than just a brandy barrel barleywine.

Bottle from the brewery. Pours translucent ruddy amber with a very slight white head that left rapidly. Aroma of brandy and a mix of grapes and brown sugar. Full bodied. Flavor of brandy, brown sugar, grape type fruit, and oak notes. Brandy dominates. Not dry, but not really sweet. Some bitterness and astringency. Balanced and tasty. Like it a lot.
