Like a charming lady, Cortigiana uses her weapons to seduce every palate. An Italian interpretation of a Belgian Blanche in perfect Birra Del Borgo style. We use alternative cereals in addition to barley malt: buckwheat, einkorn and a small percentage of oat flakes. The hops are moderate while the spices are generously added during the last step of the boiling: we add a good amount of ginger to the classic coriander and orange peel. The result is a very fresh, smooth and elegant Blanche with a unique aromatic profile.

Shared 750 ml bottle. ABV is 5%. Pale golden colour, white head. Both aroma and flavour has hints of honey, but the beer is not very sweet. Also spicy saison yeast and decent bittering hops.

Belgian style blonde ale from a stylish, rosé wine-like bottle - as many Italian craft brewers use... Ever since Borgo was taken over by AB InBev, distribution of their beers obviously increased, found this one at the new Delhaize supermarket in Lokeren, much to my surprise really. Medium thick, snow white, moussy but quite large-bubbled head, slowly dissipating over a hazy straw blonde beer with warm peachy hue. Attractive, bit 'rustic' aroma of dried lemon zest, pineapple, white grape juice, sourdough, fresh camomile, unripe plums, dry hay, green apple, white pepper, some iron. Fruity onset, sweetish peach and pineapple, hint of pear with soft sourish edges, lively and minerally carbonation effect, smooth, 'juicy' mouthfeel. Pleasant bready malt sweetish middle, the breadiness being increased in the finish by yeast , but also bittered by a floral, spicy, leafy hoppiness, quite long and drying, in a 'noble', balanced way. Apparently intended as a 'golden ale' but this is much closer to a traditional Belgian style saison, albeit a 'clean' and light one; it does, however, have the crispness, dryness, fruity and hayish qualities, breadiness and spritzy carbonation to make it qualify as a saison - so ignoring brewer's intent, I think its classification as a saison here is quite appropriate. Nice to see something like this pop up in a large supermarket chain, hopefully AB InBev will not further interfere with production too much so that this quality level can be maintained.

Why call it a Saison, when the brewery itself calls it Dorata (Golden ale)? Small if reasonably stable, just yellowish head; fully hazy yellow-orange beer. Very nice citrussy nose, New World hops, quite spicy, lunaria, lupuline, orange, kumquat. Faint bitterish, faintly spicy, citrussy flavour. CItruspeel. Slightly burning MF, much better carbonated than it looks. No new aftertaste, but long-lasting flavours, emphasizing the hopbitterness. Really good. If ABInbev lets del Borgo keep doing these, and distribute them into warehouses as Delhaize, I really don't mind the takeover that much...8/4/7/4/14
