Special Brune represents a brown "refectory" beer, the sort of beer drunk by monks with meals on a daily basis. Look for a deep malt foundation, with caramel almond-like notes and a succinct dry finish.

Can from the Grumpy Goat, Reading. My first from this brewer. Murky brown with a lasting beige head. Sour fruit up front then some sweetness. Plums, raisins, brown bread and nuts. Light dryness in the finish but the intriguing sweet and sour fruit remains. Very interesting and very tasty. Good stuff!

440cl can online from The Trembling Madness. Pours a very dark brown with a medium sized fast dissipating beige head. Aromas of dry dark fruits, caramel and candied sugar. Taste is different, very tart and sour with stewed fruit. Fizzy mouthfeel. Not my thing. Do not like.

Can at home, from HOTM online, 05/02/23. Extremely dark mahogany brown ... almost black ... topped with a good sized lasting khaki head. Nose is burnt biscuit, nutty, herb, yeast esters, dried fruit rinds, brown bread, light phenols. Taste comprises yeast esters, herb, trace of banana, dried fruit rinds, toffee, dark malts, caramelised sugars, touch of pear drop. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid Belgian kit.

On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with minimal off-white head. There’s toffee, roast malts and raisins in the aroma. In the mouth it is slightly sweet with dark fruits initially to the fore, but after a while they are joined by malts, almonds and cola/ Finish is slightly dry and fruity. Thisi s really rather nice.

Can. Also on tap down SMOD. Clear deep ruby red. Slim dense ring of beige foam. Nose has sweet vine fruit. Dried fruit. Light chocolate notes. Whiff of marzipan. Taste has a fleeting fruit sweetness turning fairly dry with a touch of vinous bitterness. Feels a little thin overall with fine brisk carbonation. Drying fruity finish.
