Welsh Whisky Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

Our ongoing experimentation with utilising oak and ageing our beers continues. After the phenomenally successful Quinquennium and Quinquennium Reserve set the standard for our big, robust imperial stouts last year as incredible first entries into our barrel ageing program, we took stock and really were astounded at where we’ve come in such a short amount of time. From those incredibly humble beginnings as a two-man setup churning through back-breaking fourteen hour brew days, we find ourselves where we are today – working with some of the brightest talents in the brewing industry today, giving them a platform to flourish and excel at their profession. Black Brook has been brewed in honour of those humble beginnings and with pride in our Welsh roots. Welsh Whisky casks, themselves formerly Madeira Sherry and Bourbon casks, impart decadent and rich flavours

Can. Near opaque dark brown black beer, small tan head. Palate is remarkably light for its hefty 14.5%, it's mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Fairly mellow dark malts, pretty modest dark chocolate and coffee. The Welsh whiskey is the star with a rich and well rounded ripe fruitiness. No heat, no spice and that's the other impressive thing about this brew, it wears it's abv very lightly indeed.

440ml can. Pitch black, with a small tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, roast malt, a little oak. Taste is very rich, roast malts, dark chocolate, caramel, molasses, oaky, whisky, big bitterness to finish with a good kick of alcohol warmth. Full bodied, smooth. Excellent impy stout.

Whisky barrel aged imperial stout by this Welsh craft brewery, sampled from tap at Bar Beenhouwer. Membrane-lacing, creamy, medium sized, yellowish beige head on a black robe with very thin ruddy-bronze edges. Aroma of dark chocolate and chocolate liqueur, clear (non-peated) whisky indeed, walnut oil, coffee grounds, hard caramel, ground hazelnuts, vanilla-scenting oak wood, bayleaf, figs soaked in cognac. Dense onset, raisin- and candied fig-like sweet with a dash of black olive-like umami, medium fizz with full, oily body; bitter black-chocolatey core with dry-caramelly and hazelnutty edges, background touches of bayleaf and salmiak plus of course a retronasal vanilla effect from oak wood; roasty coffeeish bitterness grows in the end, propelled forward by leafy hops and tannic woodiness, but in the end also by boozy whisky, accentuating the pepperiness a bit – while a sweeter, rounder ‘chocolateyness’ continues well into the finish. Rich and tasty, a typical postmodern barrel aged ‘impy’ in U.S. style, but perhaps just a tad too whisky-forward and boozy for its own good.
