Cask at Briar Rose, Birmingham. Clear amber with a nice creamy white head and plenty of lacing. Caramel, apricot, zest, earthy with slight yeast edge, sweet but with a floral bitterness. Smooth body. Decent.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol 15/10/22. Deep amber in colour with a slight head. Sweetish, caramel and red fruit aroma, with some leafy hops. Flavour of caramel with ripe, biscuity, malts leading to a slightly bitter finish. Ok.

Half-pint, cask ale at Barrel Vaults (JDW). Misty golden-brown body, a bubbly ring to the rim of the glass, clingy lacing. Moments of biscuit and caramel on the nose. Dark doughy flavoured joined by caramel, dried fruits, and lightly spiced. Bittersweet twist to the ending. Medium bodied. Nice. (St Pancras, London 04.11.2022).

Cask at The Gordon Highlander. It pours clear brown with a thick, sturdy beige head. The aroma is earthy, woody, nutty, brown bread, rivita and caramel. The taste is dry, woody, nutty, bitter - sweet, caramel, toffee, some spice, dried leaves, light tannin and leather with a drying, nutty finish. Average body and nice lively soft carbonation. Excellent condition really saves this one. Wouldn't exactly call this a cali common... Ok overall.

[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading] A bright amber pour with a thin white head; bready aroma; soft white bread taste; and a fresh grassy bitter finish. Very drinkable, but equally forgettable.

Cask @ Waterhouse, Manchester. Wetherspoon 2022 Autumn Beer Festival Ale. Clear dark amber with a smooth head. Its aroma gives the impression it's a basic bitter but its taste is a little more complex with earthy heading towards chocolate malts, also there's a smoothness. A hint of fruit exists but not much to be found in my pour. Low bitter finish.

Cask at Wheatsheaf, Stoke on Trent. Pours the classic “bitter brown” with a small off-white head. There’s malts and caramel in the aroma. In the mouth, autumn fruits are to the fore, with mushy rotting apples and malts, Some hints of ginger and spices too. Finish is quite bitter. This is OK – but if I hadn’t read the blurb I would have called it a bitter.
