Anchovy is an experimental hop from Segal Ranch in Washington State. It was given its, frankly, sensational name by our friends at Fast Fashion in Seattle, who were the first brewery to sponsor an acreage of this one-of-a- kind variety. Expect watermelon and lemon sherbet on the nose followed by flavours of raspberry, pine and vanilla.

Hazy golden beer, thin white head. Bittersweet zesty aroma with some dry hoppiness. Flavour has bitter lemon, grapefruit, orange, grassy hops, maybe something a little peppery. Big and punchy, with just enough to the aftertaste to have you ease up on it a little. Very decent.

440ml can. Murky golden, white head. Aroma lemon, melon, berries, tropical fruits. Taste of lemon sherbet, melon, berries (raspberry?), pine, tropical fruits. Medium bodied. Despite the silly name these Anchovy hops are actually very nice, the suggestion of lemon sherbet is spot on.

5th June 2024
Can. Hazy gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Airy smooth palate, decent fine minerally carbonation. Smooth malts, a nice soft creamy sweetness. Anchovy hops start with near ubiquitous pine and a very mild hop skunk. I don't get all the claimed flavours but, I am liking what I am tasting. Vanilla obvious and goes well with the creamy malts. Light raspberry candy - tick. There is a really sherbet thing going on here, especially on the finish but, lemon? Maybe a trace, as much soft lime as lemon, slightly tangy with it. Finishes light and semi dry. Any watermelon flavours are lost on me in this particular brew although I seem to recall tasting it in other Anchovy hopped beers. Overall, a really nice IPA that opens up this unique new hop very well indeed. Cheers Beak!
