Pours hazy orangeblonde. Medium white head. Scent is very full, grape, mild petrol-like. Malty, quite fruit forward. Not getting a lot of the beer honestly. Taste is sharp, tart, acidic back (pretty sharp). Still very grape forward, but due to the acidity, the beer isn't completely 'lost'. Pretty acidic, even. Medium body, medium carbo. Way more rough than expected.

21 July 2024. At Café De Welkom, Ghent. Cheers to Maarten & Nicolas!
Hazy ochre, no head. Aroma of grape must, old white wine, fermenting peach, yellow apple, wet hay, sherry, vague parsnip. Taste has sour apricot, green apple and grape surrounded by funky hay and wet wood in a sourdough-malty body. Tart stone fruit, grape must and grape skins (offering woody tannins) in the finish, some warming white wine-like alcohol. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Lovely quasi-Grape Ale.

18/VII/24 - on tap @ De Welkom (DOK taproom, Gent), BB: n/a (2024-549)
Pretty cloudy orange blond beer, no head. Aroma: pretty funky, herbal, a little wild, sourish impression, lovely complexity going on here. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: good acidity, pretty bitter, earthy, fruity, some tropical fruits, citrus notes, a bit woody, soft acidity. Aftertaste: more fruity notes, white grapes, some grapefruit, a little bitter, herbal touch, some tannins, more fruity, nice one!

Special blend, consisting of a Dok sour ale (in the ‘Méthode Ghentoise’ series) with Sauvignac grapes on the one hand and old De Troch lambic on the other hand, created for the first anniversary of the De Welkom café Dok Brewing Company operates in the Patershol quarter of Ghent. Some tiny off-white bubbles but quickly gone so no head formation, misty apricot blonde robe with ochre tinge. Fruity, tart, rich bouquet of pickled apricots, preserved lemons, kefir, sour grapes and grape skin, fruit yoghurt, wet wood, unripe orange, freshly crushed green gooseberries, melon, yellow plum, dry sherry, sorrel, rhubarb wine, lime. Estery onset, lots of unripe plum and melon, gooseberry, sour grape – actual sour grape this time, with that dry and tart Sauvignac effect integrated seamlessly into the esters and fruity lactic acidity of the base beers; flat carb, vinous body. Slender cereally maltiness under a heap of ongoing tart fruitiness, sour grape and gooseberry upfront, hints of plum and rhubarb, continued in a drying finish with rustic woody accents (even a whiff of oaky vanillin) and a vague sherryish effect from the old lambic, but the fruitiness remains unabated, in a bright, yellow-green, grapey and stonefruity way, acting juicy and refreshing. Lovely ‘versnijbier’ of grape ale and lambic – though the latter could have been a tad more pronounced for me. In any case, this Altijd Welkom perfectly fits Dok’s Méthode Ghentoise series of sour ales, which so far has produced one beauty after another – this one is certainly no exception.
