The latest addition to Boneyard’s growing family of beers – a 14-percent imperial stout, dubbed Suge Knite, and pronounced just like the infamous gangsta rap producer – is the Evander Holyfield of ales: a serious heavyweight.

Inspired by another oversize stout, the Dark Lord, from Indiana’s 3 Floyds brewery, with whom Boneyard Brewmaster Tony Lawrence previously collaborated on Boneyard’s Cascadian ale, Armored Fist. Suge Knight is a massive beer that Lawrence said took some real coaxing throughout the brewing process. The result is a near masterpiece that is proving popular with people who might not usually reach for a Russian stout at the end of their shift. Stay stout, Bend.

Sample, kindly passed over to me by cgarvieuk, CBC, second session. Mahogany coloured body. Dark malty smell. Flavours of liquorice, earthy malts and ash. Rounded roasted malty ending. Warming alcohol tingling on the tongue. Full bodied. A heavy and tasty imperial stout (02.05.2014).

Draft at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014, Session 2. Pours clear, deep brown with a creamy, tan foam head. The nose is all sugary chocolate, dunked in maple syrup. Medium to big sweet flavor with milk chocolate, light balancing earthy bitterness, and toasted marshmallows. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish with low bitterness, more sugary milk chocolate. Simple but very drinkable for a 14% impy stout.

Sample from tap, CBC 2014. Pitch black with a dense, creamy tanned head. Roasted aroma with rich malts, chocolate, bread, caramel, coffee and tar. Taste is sweet. Full body with an oily texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes roasted and bitter with rich malts, coffee and chocolate. A rich and filling Stout.

Sample at CBC 2014. Black with a small tan head. Aroma and taste of roasted malt, licorice, dark chocolate, coffee and something that reminded of brown sugar. The finish was bitter and long.

On tap at Belmont Station. Pours a pure jet black color with a small brown head. A massive sugary dark fruit nose. The flavor is big roasted malts, huge oily fruit, sugary sweet, essence of prune. Viscous. Damn good. Boneyard lives up to the hype.

Tap at APEX, Portland - 06/11/12. Pitch black with a dirty coffee head that soon thins. Dark malts on the nose, sweet sugars, dark chocolate, molasses, liqourice. Tastes of chocolate, roast malt, molasses, liqourice, dark fruit tones and boozey ! Full bodied with fine carbonation. A big dirty beast of a beer, the booze is evident for all to taste, but well balanced and the whole 14% it packs is pretty well hidden! Good stuff again from Boneyard.
