To celebrate the success of Garún Nr. 19, the highest rated Icelandic beer on Untappd.com, BeerAdvocate.com and RateBeer.com (where it scores a whopping 98/100), we decided to give it the royal treatment and age it in cognac casks for 10 months. The aging process gives Garún heady tones of oak and vanilla in addition to the intensely rich palate of chocolate, licorice and coffee.

Garún is named for the heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales, The Deacon of Dark River. A tale of ghosts and undying love.

Draught. Black colour with a mediumsized beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, some dried fruits, mild chocolate and some alcohol, wood and mild toffee. Flavour is pretty much the same elements as the aroma but in a rather sweet and smooth way. Nice roasted edge to it.

(Bottle) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, wood, nuts, vanilla, orange peel and a touch of cognac. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, coffee, liquorice, nuts, vanilla, orange, cognac, caramel and a vinous and warming finish with a generous roasty bitternes. Almost full body, quite sweet. Powerful and tasty with a balanced touch of cognac and wood. Very nice.

Bottle at Hundholmen, Bod. Has a dark brown to black colour and a beige head. Aroma of chocolate truffles, liquor, caramel, vanilla and some coffee and alcohol. The flavor has more roasted malt with ash, coffee beans and dark chocolate. Has a rich and soft mouth feel, full-bodied and a balanced bitterness. A complex and rich IS with lots of roastedness in the taste. Would be even better with cellaring.

(Keg at Mullikka, 20161209) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized, lightly brown and it lasted long. Aroma had wood, cognac, dark chocolate and cognac. Palate was full bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, wood, cognac, ash, salty liquorice and bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty, woody, burnt and bitter. A nice barrel infused brew in which alcohol was a bit too much dominating.

(330ml bottle from Systembolaget) Pours pitch black with a small but persistent mocha coloured head and spotty lace. Aroma of cognac, fortified wine, chocolate, light vanilla, caramel, dusty light roast. Flavour is rather sweet and fruity, and dominated by barrel notes of cognac, caramel, raisins, wood, light roast and chocolate, and more cognac. Quite some alcohol heat building in the finish which dries things out a fair ways. much like with a brandy. Light to medium bodied for style with soft carbonation. The barrel and alcohol is kind of dominant here, it feels hot and must be sipped slowly like a spirit. Overwhelms the base and body.
