To celebrate the success of Garún Nr. 19, the highest rated Icelandic beer on Untappd.com, BeerAdvocate.com and RateBeer.com (where it scores a whopping 98/100), we decided to give it the royal treatment and age it in cognac casks for 10 months. The aging process gives Garún heady tones of oak and vanilla in addition to the intensely rich palate of chocolate, licorice and coffee.
Garún is named for the heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales, The Deacon of Dark River. A tale of ghosts and undying love.

Bottle. Sweet, chocolaty and very alcoholic. Has some potential, but a bit too strong at the moment.

12oz bottle pours a deep black with some cloudy, brown head. Nose has chocolate, some dried berry, heavy molasses and licorice, the barrel is fairly absent in the nose, if anything a little dark berry jam. Flavor is really nice, malt, chocolate, molasses, licorice, some red berries, a little fortified wine. Finishes with some booze, and some licorice sweetness. Call me crazy, but this is so well balanced.

Tap at Koht, Tallinn. Opaque black color, smalloff-white head. Wood, toasted malts in the nose. Medium-bodied. Toasted malty, wood, fresh wood! Wood dominates and some alcohol. Ok.
