In 2004, the city of Ostend commemorated the 400th anniversary of the 'Siege of Ostend' that took place from 1601 to 1604. At the request of the 'Oostendse Bierjutters', a group of enthusiastic beer geeks, this unique beer was created. What was intended to be a one-off brew for the festivities, has become an indispensable icon for Ostend.
The malt of this characteristic, golden blonde triple comes from the French region of Beauce-Gatinais. Together with the added German Munich malt both provide a full-bodied finish. A selection of 4 fine hop varieties from Germany, the Czech Republic, Great Britain and Belgium ensures a subtly balanced nose. The careful re-fermentation in the bottle ensures a firm, creamy head.

June 2009: Brown 33cl bottle, best before Feb 2010, poured carefully into a Westmalle chalice leaving the sediment in the bottle. Pale yellow and slightly hazy/cloudy with a small white wisp on top, a poor collar tried to hang onto the glass but failed after about two minutes. Citrus aromas, grapefruits and lemons, not overly sour but certainly not a sweet smelling beer. The taste is sour and the two fruits mentioned in the aroma really come to the fore and hit your buds. Refreshing and sharp, but missing something, no umph or depth. At 7.7% the alcohol is well defind and more noticeable than other Belgian Tripples because of that shallow feel the body has. Nothing really wrong with the beer, but it could look a bit more appetizing instead of like washing up water!

Draft @ Delirium Hoppy Loft.

Bottle (as Keyte Triple) @ home shared with DutchDrebus. Average white head, clear yellow color. Smells like some kind of soap. Also some sweetness in the smell. Taste lightly sweet, light soapy as well. Lively carbo, medium body.

On tap at Botteltje, Ostend, Belgium. A golden coloured pour with a decent white head. Fruity, yeasty aroma. Tastes quite bitter, dry, a little sweetness, almost tart. It was acceptable.

(bottle, 33cl, as Keyte Oosténdse Tripel, 7.7% abv) Hazy, golden colour with a blond and dense huge foamy head. Yeasty, mildly sweet malty aroma with slightly tart citric notes. Bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied with a calm carbonation. Malty and yeasty spicy taste with notes of citrus/lemon; bitter-sweet, biscuity malty and slightly fruity finish. Solid and slightly simple Tripel. 14.III.11

Cloudy gold, snow-white head that fades but leaves thick lacing. Aroma has citrus hops, orange, sugar, brioche. Taste has upfront white pepper and coriander with some sugary sweetness, peaches and pears and a little doughy yeast. Carbonated mouthfeel. No great depth, but a refreshing and balanced tripel.

33 cl bottle, about one year old. Pale yellow color, no head to speak of, very light carbonation. Flavor is weird, herbal/fruity (unripe pear?), somewhat sweet. Flavor is fairly decent, a bit malty sweetish, a bit dry. Body is quite thin because of lack of carbonation. Not much for an aftertaste. I’ve had better from Strubbe.
