Ommegang Biere de Mars is a Belgian-style dry hopped amber ale with a bit of magical space dust woven in Brettanomyces bruxellensis, a wild-yeast used in the secondary fermentation. The Brett imparts added tartness, a bit of zing and some farmhouse funkiness.

Biere de Mars reveals a copper-amber body and a frothy white head that builds, clings and stays. Aromas are of malt and grain, clove, fruit and a bit of funk. Flavors are full-bodied with delicate malty sweetness, followed by spicy, peppery yeastiness and Brett-induced funk. Hopping is subtly bitter and aromatic, bumped up a bit by dry hopping. The finish is dry and gently lingering.

Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a bright orange-amber color with a huge peach-white head. The aroma was yeasty and sweet with notes of orange, cream and vanilla. The flavor was dry, musty and earthy with a sharp rough fruity hop presence and a musty bretty undertone. The finish was long, bretty and roughly fruity. Medium body. Ok.

75ml. Batch #2, October, 2008. Large, frothy, off-white head that slowly diminishes. Hazy medium amber body with some large floaters. Brett aromas dominate the nose — lacquer, band-aid, barnyard, cobweb. Less noticable are notes of tea, clove and herbs. Hints of floral hops. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly to moderately bitter with some tartness. Medium body with lively carbonation and a watery texture. Fairly straightforward beer. Good.

Pour is an orange with a large white head. Aroma is very fruity and spicy with a nice helping of funk. Flavor is more of a fruit to start then comes a bit of yeast and barnyard. Finishes tart and dry with a little of the brett left on the tounge. A stellar example of the style. If you have ever had a BDG and thought MEH, give this one a try it will open your eyes to what the style could be.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of Miver. Hazy golden with an off-white head. Sweetish aroma of fruit, a little coriander and some yeast. Medium body, sweetish fruit, light notes of yeast and phenols. Finishes dry. If there’s any Brett in this it’s hardly detectable. 010509
