Cask @ The White Swan in Hebden Bridge where the pump clip is different - specifically celebrating Elizabeth Wood’s 30 years as landlady at this pub. The ale is bright copper coloured with a thick smooth head. It has a mild malt running through its aroma and taste with some grain evident too.

Cask at Hole in the Wall, Darlington. Golden amber colour, creamy white head leaving lots of lacing and malty & slightly vinegary aroma. The taste is malt, fruity with some tartness and an earthy bitterness. Smooth mouth feel, medium bodied, medium carbonation, dry bitter finish. OK bitter.

On tap @ the Starbank Inn, Edinburgh. Pours golden to amber. Nice head. The nose is of hay and lemon. The taste is of more lemon, hay and some honey. Also, a bit of a cardboard note, unfortunately. The palate is light to medium in body and texture with a clean finish. Overall, so so!

Dec 2006: A Saint Barabara’s Day lunch, first course, 4 pints of Black Sheep (I wont tell you what else I drank). Very lively, but once it settled down, it looked a treat, off white foaming head on a body of pure delight, a fine amber brown. The hop aroma isn’t overly strong, but is there if you search for it. Well balanced taste, a true bitter in every sense. Taste stays for a while, a mid-sweet-mildly-bitter flavour. Very drinkable. 2011 Update: 1st course at this years Saint Barbara’s function, only 3 pints this time. Still a well balanced easy drinking session bitter: ideal before the onslaught of the wines and port which followed.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Distinct and toffee and caramel notes in this otherwise unremarkable but drinkable bitter.
