Chocolate Orange Imperial Stout

Ingredienser: Vand. Bygmalt: Pale Ale, Cara-Munich, Chocolate, Crystal T50, Roasted Barley. Hvedemalt, Chocolate wheat. Cacao nibs. Orange oil. Humle: Columbus. Gær: UK-Ale

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Alex who grew up in San Francisco on the American West Coast, in the great state of California. A state known for The Beach Boys, Arnold Schwarzenegger and big, juicy oranges. Generally, Alex grew up a happy boy, but he would always be happiest around Christmas time. You see, every Christmas Alex’ parents would give him a little foil-wrapped chocolate orange. It was not a real orange, but it came in the shape of an orange, only made of orange flavored chocolate. And when the foil was removed you would find delicious slices of chocolate in the shape of orange slices. So incredibly yummy. Yes, Christmas was indeed the best of times. Many, many moons later, through the twists and quirks of life, Alex found himself in Copenhagen, Denmark, running a small brewpub with his wife. Something he had not even remotely imagined when he was a little boy in San Francisco. But the memory of those delicious chocolate oranges, he brought with him all the way from sunny California to chilly Copenhagen. So, when Amager Bryghus teamed up with Alex for a collaborative Christmas beer, it was only natural that together we tried to recreate those lovely chocolate oranges with a rich and filling Imperial Stout as the base. Cheers to fond childhood memories.

Draught @ Bicycle Brewing, Copenhagen. Pours Black with a small head. Orange truffle. Orangestænger fra Toms. Smoothness. I like orange. But a little too artificial one sided.

19 December 2024. Christmas Beer Evening Part 2 with the lovely Anke! Can from Mr. Hop.

Hazy black, stable, foamy, beige head. Strong aroma of 'orangettes' and Pim's biscuit, pralines, chocolate sauce, candied orange peel, triple sec, baba cake. Taste has sweet candied orange peel and canned mandarin in a fondant- & pralines-like malt body for a pure 'orangette' profile. Earthy hoppy finish offering bitter fondant & orange peel and warming triple sec-like alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Truly delivers what it promises; probably a 'love it or hate it' type of beer that does lack some depth for an Imperial Stout.

Tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours dark brown, almost black, with fine brown foam. Aroma is intense of essential oil, being very evident. Body is smooth, silky, average in thickness and very moderate in carbonation. Taste is fairly sweet, maybe excessive, with some roastiness. The impact of orange oil is very relevant, not really pleasant. Final is fairly long, though not intense.

Can. A hazy dark brown to black beer with a small, dense beige head. The aroma has loads of orange, with dark chocolate, some roasted malts and coffee hints. Some alcohol too. It's full-bodied and wamimg. sweet, with a good dash of bitterness. The flavor has roasted malts, dark chocolate and some coffee, with quite a lot of orange juice and orange zest. Lasting finish. A bit too much orange in this one, but it works well as a beer to share. 241219
