If Maris Otter malt is the body of our beer then hops are its spirit. Each year we choose our hops not just by farm but by individual garden and time of harvest. One older variety, Challenger, and one new,Boadicea, used as unprocessed whole leaf hops. Extravagant, perhaps, but delicious.

On cask at the brewery. Smooth malty fresh beginning. Very nice Ale characteristics, malt with a dry and bitter body. The aftertaste is long and round. Malty, smooth, fresh and like a good bitter has to be! Great with a dry ending with caramel and nuts!

Cask at Lion and Key in Hull. Film-type layer, good lacing. Deep amber coloured body. Brittle caramel on the nose. Blended taste profile of caramel, biscuit and juicy malts. Malt bitter ending, nicely roasted. A solid and tasty Brit bitter (shared with Finn, 25.11.2015).

Cask at the Cross Keys, Harpenden. Deep amber with a thin cream head. Not great at first- a bit of fetid swamp water; thought it was going to be yet another dreadful beer from this below par brewery. However, chocolate and treacley malt develop, with some grassy hop notes and a mild earthy bitterness to balance, and you know what? It’s actually OK. Not great though, just OK. But pleasantly drinkable all the same.

Cask at the Old Sugar Loaf, Dunstable. Brown bitter. Sweet aroma, like fruit malt loaf. Sweetness and malt dominate through taste. Verdict: I like it. Another good beer from the ever-dependable Tring.

Cask at The Nags Head, Great Missenden, Bucks. An amber coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Fruity, hoppy aroma. This was really fresh, tasted fruity, malty, caramel, slightly bitter finish. Good session ale.

Cask at the Crispin, Wokingham. Copper coloured with a loose cream head; fruity aroma; soft texture, sweet and fruity flavour - sultanas perhaps; then some fresh grassy hops to finish. A very quaffable bitter.

A nutbrown beer with no head. The aroma is very faint nutty. The flavor is sweet hoppy - from aroma hops - mixing with notes of nuts and wood before it gives way to a dry bitter end. A nice tasting bitter.
