This is our take on a classic Scottish style, 60 Shilling Ale, a beer which is dark in colour but light in alcohol content. This 3.4% beer is brewed with a base of the heritage barley variety, Chevalier, with a blend of crystal and roasted malts, and hopped with Admiral hops, to create a rich, yet easy-drinking beer with notes of dried fruits, hazelnut and burnt caramel.

440ml can. Pours a very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of toffee, caramel, fruited malt loaf. Taste is rich and malty, sweet-ish, raisins and other dried fruits, malt loaf, slightly burnt caramel, light gentle roasty bitterness at the end, finishing somewhat dry. Light-medium bodied. Not had many trad Scottish ales to compare to but it was sort of along the lines of a Mild, really nice.

Can from Raynville Superstore. It pours very dark brown small khaki head. The aroma is sweet, rich maltage, molasses, caramel, cola, raisin, sultana and fruit cake. The taste is initially dryish and toasty, bitter - sweet, caramel, cola, molasses, toasted fruit cake, dried/dark fruits, sultana, plum, date, malt loaf and the vaguest hint of smoke/charred wood with a drying finale. Light+ body average carbonation. Love the balance to this. Seems simple but is very well executed. Tasty and moreish.

Actually not bad, but still like drinking in Scotland in the 70s - not a hop in sight

Handpull cask at the Mean Eyed Cat, Newcastle. Mid-brown and somewhat translucent with a thick beige/khaki head. Light aroma,I am getting Ovealtine notes with some fruity character, maybe red grape. Sweet, malty taste, more light chocolate, with some gentle bitterness mid-sip. A simple, inoffensive sipper. Trust Newbarns to do a style like this so well.
