Settle in for an alternate take on Troegenator. An extended stay in bourbon barrels has transformed this fiercely loved double bock into a nuanced layer cake of toasted coconut, creme brûlée, and whiskey-soaked oak. Way back when, Troegenator caught everyone – including us – by surprise, but putting it in barrels was a sure thing. Opulent, silky and downright otherworldly, Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator is for the believers.

You know I love a beer when I'm willing to pay $16 for a 375 mL bottle of a variant. And I'm a fool, too, cause there's a decent chance this won't be nearly as good as the original. From Vintage Estate. 2018 vintage. Dark brown, thin fizzy brown head, poor head retention. Aroma of toffee, oak, vanilla, bourbon. Taste is toffee, raisin, oak, vanilla, molasses, bourbon. Full bodied, slick, mild booziness. Nice beer.

2017 bottle, shared by Stacey on 1/2/19, thanks!
Clear auburn-tinted mahogany with a small, dark beige head that sits at light cover.
Strong but aromatic and complex bourbon rises up with dry chocolate complementing it. Vanilla and oak add strength and depth and there is no sharp alcohol yet certainly inevitable appearance. Biscuit, bread and raisins through the middle with choco-bourbon lingering.
Heavy bourbon with dry toffee and chocolate. Strong bread, prune and raisin. Extremely dry throughout which doesnt do much to balance all of this rich bourbon and barrel. Spicy, strong and with a fairly soft, tannic texture and engaging carbonation. Just too intense with too much bourbon, bread and prune. Needs more malt depth.

Pours clear mahogany into a Trappist glass. Mocha head with little retention recedes to nothing. Vanilla, pit fruit and bourbon aromas. Soft with sweet hot caramel and pit fruit upfront turning to vanilla and dry oak in the medium length finish.

Bottle. Pours clearish mahogany. Small tan head, some lacing. Aroma is dark sugars, roasted malts, oak tannin, vanilla. Flavor is medium sweet, light bitter, raisins, coffee grounds. Not getting bourbon; I need to verify I don't have the oak aged as opposed to the bourbon version. Medium body.

375 ml corked and caged bottle. Only cellared about 3 months. Deep ruby color, low carbonation. Aroma is molasses, raisins, vanilla, bourbon. Flavor is caramel, molasses, lots of vanilla leading to bourbon, and finishing with a bit of oak dryness. Mild lingering raisins.

Alcohol is not overwhelming but here in the form of warming after the sip. the Bock character remains under the barrel treatment. The body is a tad thin but... No matter, the flavor is just wonderful.

Poured from bottle caramel brown with a one finger khaki head that fades slowly with nice lacing. Nice carbonation and medium bodied. Light malty bourbon nose, flavor is dark fruit, sweet malt, bourbon and hints of molasses, toffee, and caramel. ABV is well hidden. Well crafted beer.
