Black IPA - Not all things are as they might appear. This is Antichrist. Supernatural in its clean flavour, a true revelation in beer style. Don't underestimate the powers of this Black IPA - a beastly 6.66% abv

Can at Level 42, thanks to Fergus, 27/07/16. Rich mahogany brown topped with a decent khaki spattering. Nose is leafy hops, light cocoa dusting, pine resin, spice, toffee. Taste comprises pine needle, liqourice tickle, spice, light charr, cocoa powder. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close peppered with light leafy hop bitterness. Decent enough CDA.

330ml bottle from Ales by Mail. Pours deep dark brown with a long-lasting, tight beige head. Aromas of pine, light roast, dark chocolate. Taste is more of the same, quite bitter. More chocolate on the finish.

Bottle. Appearance - purple black with an olive sheen. Nice crema head. Nose - pine and grapefruit pith. Mocha to follow. Taste - darkchocolate and prunes and coffee follows. Resin and pine intermingled. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - great example of the style.

Bottle. Archer Road Beer Stop, Sheffield. Clear, dark cola brown. Thin, dense, sticky, lasting, messy, light tan head. Looks great. Nose has fruity coffee bean. Blackcurrant hop. Some pine. Liquorice. Peach. Citrus hop. The full works. Taste has an initial, roast sweetness, turning earthy, fruity, resinous bitter. Full body. Rich and smooth. Fruity, piny, roast bitter finish. Nice one.

Cask @ Soup Kitchen, Manchester. Black with next to no head. Quite smooth and easy drinking for its strength, and not too sweet either. It’s tropical fruits are very light and hardly noticeable, with darker malts a little more dominant. Has a slightly soapy aroma and taste. Maybe didn’t travel too well.

(Cask at Craft Beer Covent Garden, London, 29 Nov 2015) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with dark rye bread, dark chocolate, cacao and pine needles. Malty, roasted, hoppy taste with notes of black rye bread, coffee, pine needles, grapefruit, liquorice and a generous piney bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and quite complex black IPA, with a generous hop presence. Very nice.
