This easy-drinking India pale ale is made up of just two malts and two hop varieties. Nearly 45% of the mash is made up of malted rye, in addition to imported German pilsner malt. Rye is a somewhat unusual brewing grain in today’s American beer culture, but has been used for centuries in Northern European brewing tradition. It has a slightly sweet, faintly nutty flavor, which is quite pleasant, but may be hard to discern amongst the intense hop flavor of this beer. Hop varieties utilized in this beer are English First Gold and U.S. Glacier in the kettle and in extensive dry-hopping. Easy Rider is a pale golden color, with a bit of haziness caused by the rye, much like the haze in a wheat beer. Crisp, clean, dry, refreshing, and VERY hoppy, with a nice sweet malty backbone to keep it all together.

Draft. An amber beer with beige head. The aroma has notes of rye, caramel, barley, and citrusy fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of rye, barley, caramel, citrus fruis, and straw, leading to a bitter finish.

Shaker pint cask pour at the brewpub in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Pour is hazed orange golden with a small off white head. Aroma is resin, soft muted citrus and mineral earthy maltiness. Nice expressive nose. Taste is softly bitter resin, followed close behind with the malty sweetness and light crystal malt. Finish is dry and bitter. Palate is medium, soft fine carbonation from the cask, clean finish. Nice one.

A nice dark golden IPA with a thin off white head. Aroma of fragrant c-hops, honey and grapefruits, some orange pulp, nice and surprising. In mouth, a good intense hops with light funk, a bit of mentol. A good IPA, doem with originality. On tap at brewpub, July 1, 2009

On draught Feb 2005 at CBC. Deep pale-golden body, light yellow, oxidized copper tones and a big white head. Hmm, smells hoppy, leafy and very bitter. Upon first sip, all notions of this being an "easy drinking india pale ale" go out the window. This is brutally bitter and unbalanced by the hops. Intense biting bitterness with more resulting dryness from the rye. Whew, this needs a huge dose of malt. Unfortunately, all it gets is some sugary pils malt. Sweet honey cream and butter notes. The huge contrast of the sweet honey pils malt flavor to the intensely dry and bitter hops does not seem to work, not for me at least. Perhaps that’s why most brewers use caramel and base malts and not pils. Not saying they have to do like everyone else, but I’m just not a fan of this mix. Almost lightly sour/metallic on the finish. Unripe limes and lemons combine, as well, on the finish. Good body on it at least. . .
