1st January 2011
2004 bottle. Cloudy brown beer. Short lived bubbly tan head. Nose of raspberry and wet wood. Crisp dry palate. Fresh raspberry dominates a mild caramel malt. Whisper of chocolate. Finishes crisp and dry with more fresh raspberry. Remarkably fresh tasting 7 year old beer.

Nice deep brown/amber coloured body with a dense tan head. Aroma of strong raspberries, honey, caramel malt, a bit of hops and even more sugars that keep lasting. Medium-bodied; Nice strong sweetness throughout with a subtle spiceyness and a bit of maltiness holding up. No hops in the taste - a bit overdone on the sweet side of things, but a very flavour-packed beer. Aftertaste shows the sweetness and little else - a bit bitter in the mouth too. Overall, a nice beer - maybe a bit overdone, but definitely good to try after holding on to it for so long. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan last year on 27-May-2006.

Red amber ale with light off-white head. Sweet caramel, raisins, fruity esters and alcohol in aroma. Rather caramelly malt with nice raisiny notes, sour points. Nice alcohol in finish. More like a barley wine. Mondial 2005.

April 2004 vintage. Hazy orange-brown body, big light tan head. Strong, sweet and sour raspberry aroma, quite tart, with toasty malts. Very sour at the front of the sip, with raspberry syrup dominating the flavor, cut by the tartness and toasty, bitter finish. Nice, a raspberry beer that breaks the tired mold. This doesn’t compare to New Glarus Raspberry Tart, the latter beer displaying a touch more tartness and a thinner, smoother body. Devil’s Horn is a bit heavy and syrupy for a sour beer, but it’s still enjoyable. The balance here is still on the raspberry syrup instead of the sour yeast strain, and I prefer the reverse relationship if possible.

An unclear red beer with a small orange head. The aroma is of oranges and raspberries. The flavor is sweet and dominated by raspberries and slightly sour - not nearly sour enough to be a Flemish Sour Ale. This beer is nothing special, but still OK.

2004 bottle (this was only produced in bottles, contrary to what the below reviews say). This Belgian Dark strong pours a dark red with medium brown tinges. Light caramel colors as well. Good off-white head and tons of lacing. Bottle conditioned. Smells of raspberry puree, slight alcohol, more estery red fruits, light belgian yeast and hints of chocolate and caramel. Quite sweet and alcoholic, lightly bitter on the finish with chocolate covered raspberries in the mix. Medium-full body, light spritzy carbonation. Still young and rough around the edges, should smooth out nicely.
