This ale pays homage to the Irish who settled on Kilgubbin, or Goose Island, in Chicago over a hundred years ago. In the Irish tradition, red ale gets its rich reddish color from roast barley and chocolate malts. Ours adds a subtle spicy finish from a touch of malted rye, to make Kilgubbin Red Ale perfect for St. Patty's or any special occasion

Medium amber with a frothy, rootbeer-float head. Looks nice. Sweet floral scent, along with malt and slight citrus. Taste is bittersweet, following with a rosey flavor. It's nice- but also very weak.

2004 Draft @ Wrigleyville Brewpub. Good light cherry-amber color with a small beige head. Aroma is very light but shows off some decent hops. Flavor is dry, lightly hoppy, with little malt sweetness to balance, slightly metallic/astringent and medium-light bodied at best. The spice is lost in the watery palate and overshadowed by the dryness of the barley and hops. Potentially good, but no balance/complexity.

Orangey brownish color, thin fizzy head. Butter-caramel aroma, with light citrus hop. Peppery and earthy flavors, if on the restrained side. Chocolatey caramel sweetness develops. Hint of nougat, nuts. Mild alcoholic finish, with slightly woody, earthy hops. General impression: down to earth, easy drinking generally bitter ale, fair match with food, a better match to session drinking in a smoky pub when you want a good beer with enough flavor to standup to the environment, but not to attract attention.

On draught at The Claddagh in Columbus, OH (as Claddagh Irish Red). Pours a dark amber-brown color with a medium thin light beige head. Thin lacing. The aroma is lightly malted and a little nutty. Medium-bodied with a fair amount of malt, as well as some caramel and nuts. The finish is not very lasting, I felt it could have been more drinkable in the long run if it had more pep. Not a bad attempt at the style, and it is drinkable.

Draft, at the brewery. Did not overly impress me. The other homebrewers I was sampling with opined that as it's a seasonal, the keg at the "brewhouse" (employee breakroom) was old. Still, great head, nice earthy smell, taste is fine, certainly a vast improvement over any other so-called "Irish Red" in this country. Any Goose is worth seeking out.

There is something about this beer that bothers me, and something else that I like. Unique flavor; tastes like toasted bread or crackers. Kilgubbin is easy to drink, and is suitable for mass consumption while retaining a certain degree of quality. Not outstanding, but an interesting Irish Ale nonetheless.
