A positive combination of Fuji cider, slow-roasted farro, a bit of cayenne and fresh cilantro.
This beer part of our Music Series of beers... this one is an amalgamation of hip-hop, beer, cider and a DIY culinary experience! Sam and Dan the Automator of Deltron 3030 teamed up to create Positive Contact, based on Dan's favorite ingredients and Dogfish Head's innovative brewing practices.
Named after a key track on the first album, Positive Contact is a 9% ABV hybrid of beer and cider brewed with Fuji apples, roasted farro, a handful of cayenne peppers and a late dose of fresh cilantro. This sweet-and-sour Belgian-ish brew is a light straw color with fruity, cider-like notes. The cayenne and alcohol give it a warming finish.
For the inaugural release (2012), the beer was packaged in a dynamic box set of six 750-ml champagne bottles, with a 10-inch vinyl EP of four new Deltron 3030 remixes created exclusively for this project, and a list of Deltron 3030-inspired recipes from a small group of renowned chefs. Subsequent releases did not include the vinyl or recipes.

750 ml bottle. Clear gold color with lasting head retention. Nose is apple and honey. Flavor is simple and clean. Belgian yeast, apples and pears. Light cilantro hints in the backend of the sip. The finish is lingering fruit without being overly sweet. Carbonation has a nice effervescent feel. Nice tingle dances over the tongue. It drinks like a 4% cider, so that’s pretty cool. Simple and easy to drink.

On tap @ Rattle N' Hum. A cloudy nice looking almost glowing, or bright glowing one with a nice lacing medium sized white top. The nose is fresh and floral. Spring blossom with snow, some fruity zesty tones, citrus and lemon zest. Like the way this smells. It tastes like a wheat ale actually. Some ripe banana, lots of yeast, cloves. Is this a heffe? Banana bubblegum, bugg and some green grassy thing in the finish. Almost herbal actually. No idea what this is, but I would guess a heffe of some sort. 13.06.2013,

Very hazy gold - amber beer. Good white head. Palate is airy and a little soft but with sharp fine carbonation. Creamy semi dry malt. Seltzer salty minerals. Like fruity tang underneath, trace of apple. Can’t really taste much of the exotic ingredients here. Comes over like a Belgian Wit albeit very smooth.

18.06.2013, tap @ Blind Tiger Ale House NY:
Small shortlasting head. Aroma is slightly fruity, wheat, citrus, hay, yeast, banana, grass, some tropical fruits. Taste is slightly dry fruity, wheat, citrus, yeast, hay, tropical fruits, citrus peel, banana. Medium bitterness, dry mouthfeel. Fair enough, but this is more like a weissbier than a fruit beer.

Bottle - Apple juice and typical Wit with mango and grass. Cloudy yellow with a rich head. Wit profile stands out with some cider tartness, booze finish. Odd. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750mL bottle, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is very bizarre, full of apple cider upfront, with cilantro and other indiscernible spices. Flavour brings out notes of apples, some subdued spices, and no hint of the cilantro. The apple cider is basically what comes through here. Light palate, with no hint of the alcohol other than the warming effect. Decent beer - bizarre as always from Dogfish Head.

Sample at Hay Merchant. The beer pours a cloudy yellow-orange color with a medium white head that evaporates steadily. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of fruits and spices. Medium to full body with flavors of caramel malt, apples, cloves and yeast. The finish is semi-sweet with grainy malt and spices left behind. Above average overall.

750 ml bottle. Pours cloudy cantaloupe with a medium collapsing off-white big-bubbly head. Aroma consists of apples, Belgian yeast. Description up there says this is loosely based on the witbier style, but that is the dominant flavor, even over the cider. It’s sweet, savory, lightly tart, finishing dry. The cayenne is very light, only barely revealing itself in the finish, providing a little heat. I’m not getting the cilantro, and I don’t know what farro tastes like, so I couldn’t tell you if it’s in there or not. Alcohol is almost completely hidden. It’s hard to believe this is 9%. Carbonation is fine, body a little thin. Overall, a good, not great beer. I wish the cayenne and cilantro were more prominent.

Refrigerated 75 cl brown bottle obained through trade with watson1977 poured into a white wine glass. Pours clear golden with big fluffy white head. Little lacing, light body, low carbonation, and yeasty aroma. Taste is coriander, cayenne pepper, herbal, some apple, and spice. The ingredients don’t meld for me, pass.
