Cask at the Holly Bush, Stockton Brook, Staffs. A bright copper colour with a loose white head; toffee aroma; malty body with a caramel taste; and a touch of spice to finish. A pleasant malty bitter.

Cask @ Cross Keys, Chester. Golden-copper with a thick creamy head. Has a light malt character with an easty to drink texture that pleases the palate.

Cask @ Staff of Life, Stoke. Mid to dark brown, not completely clearing. Cola, chocolate, hazelnut, astringency in the nose. Weird. Mostly like a sweet extra in the taste, but bitter sparks shoot up all over the tongue for the finish and aftertaste. Ok in my opinion the least successful recipe in the Joules stable.

Named after a carving in the breweries hospitality room (carved in 1932), this is currently their strongest beer. My review is of two hand pulled pints in one of their pubs: The Royal Oak in Eccleshall on 5th April 2012. Lovely rich, reddy brown body with an off-white to creamy coloured head which clings to the glass nicely. The aroma is of a nutty malt loaf with a caramel topping and suggests a full bodied and malty, semi-sweet tasting beer: and that is exactly what you get. I really liked this: I’m into the sweeter, maltier brews these days and this ’floated my boat’.
