Brut Imperial Pilsner

With biscuit malt and fruity grape aromas from Hallertau Blanc and Enigma hops, it’s aged for 8 months in the classic champagne combo of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay barrels, brut dry and much too tasty to smash on the hull of a ship or spray on a racing car.

Bottle from Waitrose in the garden, 23rd July 2020. Pours golden and clear. Aroma has pils element, barrel, wine, Sherry. Taste is pils yeast, Sherry, wine, barrel, lots of vineous notes, booze. It’s a powerful beast of a beer, complex, boozy, quite a memorable one.

Bottle shared in London - cheers to Dan. Pours clear yellow-gold with a bubbly white head. Nice beer, big biscuits character, touches of ripening lemon, straw. Medium bodied with mellow carbonation. Lightly warming finish, more rich biscuits, straw, lemon, white grape. Tasty.

[50cl bottle from Waitrose, Bracknell.] A slightly hazy amber coloured pour with a thick creamy looking, cream coloured head; yeasty aroma with some grass and grain; sweet taste with traces of honey and a sourish grainy body; and a syrupy finish with a little spice. Nothing more than a posh version of Special Brew.

Bottle from Waitrose, West Byfleet. Earthy slight vinous yeasty aroma. Copper gold. Bubbly. Thick shaving foam white head. Medium bitter. Saccharine sweetness with a vinous touch. Gradually gets fruitier and boozier. Heavy bodied. Slick. Lazy fizzy carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. It's OK. Middle class tramp juice. But too sweet for me.

22nd December 2019
Almost clear gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Palate is light and semi dry and has a good fine minerally carbonation. Light malts, smooth and with a light creamy sweetness. Crisp grape, typically brut bitterish but with a nice chardonnay sweetness underpinning. Smooth floral grape finish. Mild bitter grape linger. There are vague touches of lager malts and citric hops but this is a superbly grapey brut affair that drinks like half it’s 11% abv and the whole bottle disappeared in no time. Hic!
