Gyle No. 431. This Brown Ale is our second collaboration with our friends and Square Mile Coffee Roasters for Uppers and Downers annual coffee beer festival. We selected two roast profiles of Yandaro coffee beans from Burundi with 20kg in a hot side steep, and 24kg in a cold side steep. A 1kg addition of slow infused fresh vanilla pods add complexity and sweetness.

Keg at The Understudy, Southbank. Have to breath in heavily to pick up chocolaty malt. Opaque chestnut. Thick creamy beige head. Creamy chocolate with a bitter core. Thick. Creamy. Average-fizzy carbonation. Long if muted finish. I'll leave it to the experts to debate whether this is a brown or stout whatever but it's damn good anyway.

Keg at Pint Shop Oxford. It pours opaque darkest brown to black with a small foamy tan head. The aroma is sweet, syrupy, creamy coffee stands out, roasted malt, toffee, maltesers, coffee cake with vanilla ice cream and toasted nut. The taste is rich, bitter - sweet, slick, oily, toasted nut, spice, toffee, earthy roast, plenty of coffee, chocolate, millionaires shortbread, maltesers, fruit cake, vanilla and toffee crisp with a spicy coffee led finish. Medium - full body and moderate, foamy carbonation. I really wasn't expecting this to be as sweet and sticky as it is. Saying that it is still rather enjoyable. Decent overall.

Can picked up from Cotteridge Wines, Cotteridge, Birmingham and consumed at home, sat down the garden by the pond Sunday 5th August 2018. Pours black with a slim beige head, coffee on the nose, sweet and with too much lactose in the mouth, I get a bit racked off with lactose in everything. Coffee in mouth, smooth but just fed up with the lactose. A8 A4 T6 P3 Ov14 3.5
