Bock
Ontbijkoek, Cinnamon, Clove & Nutmeg
When the Dutch traded Manhattan for the tiny island of Pulau Rhun in 1667, the world thought they were crazy. True, it was probably the worst land swap in history (not to mention a bad colonial look), but what Pulau Rhun had was nutmeg, a key ingredient in our autumnal beer. This warm, rye-forward bock is an honest attempt to can one of Holland's most beloved and historical treats: the breakfast cookie. Manhattan was lost, but our Ontbijkoekbock was found.

On tap at the Uiltje Bar, Haarlem on 29th November 2025. Deep copper with pale tan foam and full lacing. Nutty malts in aroma. Tangy fruits and nutty malts in-mouth with the suggestion of salt. Cake fruits and spiced malts dominate the finish. Zingy mouthfeel and a medium body. Very pleasant.

Canned 330ml. -Courtesy of Marko, shared with him & Hrabren. Unclear amberish coloured, minimal off-white head, caramel, weak cinnamon and light oxidation in the nose. Sweet malty, caramel, cinnamon and quite strong nutmeg with rather sweet finish.

0.33 l can thanks to Marko, shared with Ogi and him. Unclear amber, minimal head. Aroma is cardboard, caramel, dried fruit such as raisins, spice. Flavour is intense gingerbread, nutmeg, sweet cocoa biscuit. Behind it, toasty malts and caramel. Sweet, oily, smooth, soft carbonation, not heavy, not cloying. Finishes sweet.

Can from KMP, a few days after expiration date, with Hrabren and Ogi. Hazy brownish-amber body, off-whtie head, lasting. Caramelly, cinnamon, nutmeg aroma. Soft, pleasant taste, caramel, nutmeg and cinnamon, not much else. Maybe lightly gone, but still tasty!

Tap at MingleMush. Clear deep brown. Bubblegum, sugary grains, soft milk chocolate, sweet berries, winegums, light roasted. Sugary sweet, but also almost medium bitter. Slick medium body. Not my thing.

The Hague Pubcrawl 2025. Tap @ MingleMush. Vrij heldere roodbruine kleur. Geurt zeer zoet met specerijen. In de mond iets minder zoet, ook wat fruitig en specerijen. Smaak is zoetig tot zoet, met jawel, specerijen. Medium body. Kruidig bitterige afdronk.

Keg at If It ain't Dutch. Clear darkish brown. White translucent head just skims the surface. Aroma... erm... a vague toffee. Flavawise we have low key toffee and and boozy sour streak. But it's ultimately unintrusive. Light. Thin..Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Not much going on.
