Dunkles Vollbier

28/VIII/24 - 33cl bottle from Weyermann Living & Drinking (Bamberg, DE), shared @ holiday in France, BB: 30/I/25 (2024-817)

Clear deep purple to brown beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: very malty, good roast, hay, cow fodder, some chocolate. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: soft roast, bitter, a bit sourish, grains, some chocolate, a little bitter. Aftertaste: caramel touch, bitter, good roast, a little watery, soft acidity in the finish. Was expecting more of this Schwarzbier. A style you don’t see often, but can be very good. This one’s a bit too watery for me.

Very dark brown colour with lasting head. Aroma has a touch of staleness to it. Bitter start to the taste. Later more nutty, toasted malt notes come through.

Dark brown with a frothy head. Mild aroma of sweet oats, lightly charred, and licorice. Taste is mildly bitter with milk chocolate underneath. Finishes aimlessly, watery and with fleeting grainy notes. Medium to light bodied, watery texture, moderate carbonation. Drinkable, but not much character.

12th Sep 2018. A private tour of the Weyermann maltings in Bamberg with the CAMRA Investors Club (two groups of twenty), followed by almost two hours in the hospitality room. Eight beers on tap; this was the last one I tried. I am not usually a fan of Schwarzbier, which is why this was the last beer i had; this however was one of the best in the style I have ever had. Black bodied (obviously) with an off-white crown. Roasted malts abound in both the nose and taste with hints of chocolate and vanilla in the aroma and flavour. Good body depth for the style too, which makes a pleasant change.
