Not for lager louts – its got too much flavour. It’s nothing like the Eurofizz brewed in chemical factories in the UK.

Bottle from The Crafty Barbers. Pours an almost clear golden colour with a smallish throthy white head. Aromas of cereals, hay, straw and small hints of honey and lemon. Taste has more of the same notes but also a nice citrus and grassy hop bitterness. Medium to full bodied with a smooth slightly oily mouthfeel, average carbonation. Big bitter citrus and grassy hop on the dry finish. Pleasantly surprised by this one. Nice enough beer.

Keg at Roost, Margate. Quite liked this place, which refers to itself as streetfood on sea; it does really good food in a friendly laid-back atmosphere. Just one beer on tap, but at least it's a local brew on rotation (often a Time & Tide seasonal). Unfortunately on my visit the beer was a lager. It was gold with a light prickly fizz and a white head. Light butter, with definite lager tendencies but a crisp lemon and grass finish that helped wash down a spicy but delicious chilli dog. I'm no fan of lagers, but when I'm forced to have them I prefer the Czech style. And this is not a bad example of the Czech style.

Lahev (@The Bottle Shop, Bermondsey): Golden to deep golden, quickly collapsing loose white head; mild spicy - hopefully Saazy - hoppy nose with a bready-malty background; mild to moderate dryish bitter-sweet flavour, malty base hardly detectable, light bodied, at least soft; slightly lingering spicy-bitter finish, unfortunately only slightly balanced by some pale malt. Právý anglický Světlý Ĺežák? Spíše ne...
