Our Christmas special, think Black Forest Gateau and you won’t be far wrong. We thought about giving it a jolly Christmas name – St Nicholess, Presentless, Cheerless or Joyless, but in the end decided to call it what it is, Heartless steeped with over 60Kg of Cherries.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up at Cotteridge Wines. Pours black-brown with a creamy, tan head. Mildly ashy roast in the aroma, some chalky cocoa. Light sweet flavour with bittersweet baking cocoa, more ash, scorched earth, some lightly tangy dark fruits. Light bodied with massaging carbonation. Finishes with further dry, bittersweet cocoa, some dried berries, cherry, raisins. Nice beer overall.

Keg @ Pilcrow, Manchester. Black with a thin off-white head. Has low roasted malts in taste, but is a little more stated in its aroma. The cherry is not too evident. There’s some roasted malts also in its aftertaste.

Almost black with no head. Aroma and flavour have cocoa and lightly roasted malts. Luckily, no trace of cherries

Cask. Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield. Very dark, chocolate brown. Dense, tan head, with a frothy top. Nose has woody, dark malts. Black cherry. Cherry stone. A little earthy. A little cakey. Taste is mostly tangy, earthy cherry stone. Dries out a fair bit. Light body. Tangy finish. Ok.
