Handpull cask at the Lime Kiln, Bristol. Mid- to dark brown, a little translucent, with a large beige/khaki head. Light aroma of dark malts, smoke, Marmite. Taste is winter spice, light grape, more Marmite. Bittersweet with a hoppy bitterness to finish. Body is surprisingly light, almost watery but there’s enough natural carbonation to give us a decent mouthfeel.

Cask at the Pup & Duckling, Solihull. Poured almost black in colour with a short-lived, frothy light tan head. The aroma is roasty, molasses. The flavour is big liquorice bitter, light sweet, with a smooth, dry, light chocolate, herbal, light floral, liquorice bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

(Cask at Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak, London, 21 Nov 2024) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with dark chocolate, coffee and black bread. Malty, roasted taste with notes of dark chocolate, sweet espresso, liquorice and a balanced cacao bitterness. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. A bit sweeter than expected, but really rich and tasty stout. Very nice.

Cask at the Southampton Arms, London on 29th July 2024. Intensely dark sepia brown with tan foam and spot lacing. Rich and intense coffee and bitter chocolate in aroma. Nutty roastiness, dark chocolate and coffee in-mouth, and finish of intense chocolate truffle. Full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel.

Cask handpull at Nelson Arms Tonbridge . Black beer lasting beige head. First half out of the cask. Some chocolate some coffee some liquorice. Supposed to be a dry stout. But it's quite juicy. Some blackcurrant blackberry flavour. Juicy finish. Not very dry. OK

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours almost black with minimal cream head. The aroma has plenty of liquorice and treacle. Pretty much the same in the mouth, where there is a slight wateriness. Plus roasted malts, and a chewy texture with some bitterness showing through later. This is a pretty decent stout – and prompted a heated discussion about Lloyd Cole & the Commotions !
