Cask at Greyhound, Stafford. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a small cream head and good lacing. There’s malts in the aroma plus hints of coffee. Malts to the fore again in the mouth, alongside autumn fruits and rye. Later there are traces of chocolate and liquorice. Fruitiness lasts into the dry finish. This was OK, but not really a stout at all – more a strong dark ale. MAY REQUIRE A RERATE

Cask at the Pup and Duckling, Solihull. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a lasting frothy off white head. The aroma is roasty malt, burnt toffee. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter, light sweet, with a smooth, rich, earthy, liqourice, floral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask at Golden Ball York. Dark cola brown cola colour. Lasting beige head. Good dry stout. More of a dark ale to be honest. It's so good to have a real ale good day condition at a pub that looks after cask beer properly. Dry bitter finish. Good.
