During a recent visit to our hop supplier, we had the chance to meet Peter Glendinning, a passionate hop developer from Herefordshire, and rub and sniff his new selections. We came back with three varieties to brew with: Bishop, Archer and Duchess. Bishop is Goldings-like, delicate and earthy with lemon and toffee notes. Archer is pungent, resinous and citrussy (lemon and grapefruit) while Duchess is distinctive with mint and licorice notes.
Alchemy X is brewed using the Bishop hop.

Cask at the CPK, Pimlico on 18th May 2011. Amber with thin lacing whitish head. Gorgeously hoppy with rich grapefruit and grass notes. Slight sweetcorn note in aftertaste and a savoury touch which is welcome. Otherwise finish is lemon citric, but quite gentle. The mouthfeel is light and pleasant.

Cask at CP&K. It pours hazy dark amber, with a very thin off-white head and soft carbonation. The nose is oak, nut, toffee and dusty. The taste is full of wood, astringent, caramel, nut and polish. I am sorry to say this is a fairly boring bitter.

Cask at the Euston Tap. Pours a faintly hazy gold with a white, thick foam head. Wood, toast and burnt sugar in the aroma. Mid sweet flavor, featuring creamy candy, burnt wood, some grassy bitters. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Earthy, woody and slightly sugary finish with light grass and tree. Decent brew.

On tap at the CP&K. Haxy brown beer, no real head. Dry palate. Dry even malt with a little hop bitterness. Struggling to find more to say! Ok but another pretty standard brown beer from Thornbridge. Competant but dull for this brewer. Doubly dissapointing when reading the intriguing hop descriptions.
