Great British and Belgian heritages combine to make a beer which takes the best elements from stouts and farmhouse saisons. Black Saison is dark and full of roasted malt flavours, balanced with a smoothness from its high wheat content. Delicate European hops add a light floral hint before the saison yeast imparts its complex, funky fruit flavours. A favourite with beer drinkers who enjoy something a little different.

Pale ale malt blended with malted wheat and roasted barley, with sparing use of summit hops and a Wallonian saison yeast

33cl bottle from beer52.com. A rather murky mahogany pour with a fast fading white head; rather strange aroma of wet straw mingled with chocolate; lively in the mouth with a refreshing spritzy feeling, but then weighed down by the chocolatey malts. A rather odd combination, not sure it works.

On cask at the Bow Bar. Appearance - chestnut with some orange chinks. Nice head. Nose - chocolate orange and I’m trying to imagine some light spice but haven’t convinced myself it’s there. Taste - creamy chocolate, light smoke note. A bit of pineapple and spice coming through towards the end. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a balanced creamy finish. Overall - definitely more on the stout side than on the saison.

Bottle from Cornelius. Deep brown body with a medium beige head. Light lacing. Aroma of coffee, fig and banana bread. Flavour of caramel, yeast and coffee. Medium body with a spritzy mouthfeel. Lively fizz. Unusual and interesting. Reminds me of a Dunkel meets Dubbel.
