Great British and Belgian heritages combine to make a beer which takes the best elements from stouts and farmhouse saisons. Black Saison is dark and full of roasted malt flavours, balanced with a smoothness from its high wheat content. Delicate European hops add a light floral hint before the saison yeast imparts its complex, funky fruit flavours. A favourite with beer drinkers who enjoy something a little different.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines, Sheffield. Clear, dark cola brown. Thin, bubbly, lasting, pale tan head. Bit of cola on the nose, too. Light roast malts. Some cocoa. Not much in the way of a saison characteristic. Taste is light sweet. Pretty thin palate. Finishes a bit flabby sweet.

Bottle split at the Dean Swift, 03/01/15. Light black with a decent khaki covering. Nose is straw, dark malt notes, spice, fruit rinds, light soap, some hop presence. Taste comprises light charr, malty, dark fruit rinds, red berry, earthy, light spice, toffee. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok saison, lower end of the style spectrum tho’ !

Bottle Dean Swift. Very dark brown. Lasting beige cream head. It’s ok but neither a stout nor a saison.

Keg at tap east. Chestnut brown hazy pour with a big frothy cream coloured head that lasts. Aroma is Belgian yeasty, straw and a bit of clove phenol. Flavour is crisp wheaty bready grains with Belgian yeast, mineral and a hint of orange. Really not very much dark malts just a little nutty raisin malt. Palate is frothy on the tongue, high carbonation and a semi crisp finish. Pretty tasty like a dark weizen with Belgian yeast.
